HURRICANE FLORENCE FLOODING PROSPECTS INCREASE

Good morning everyone. We continue to focus on our main story, Hurricane Florence, as a stall along the Carolina coast is looking more likely before creating havoc inland. While models disagree on certain aspects of Florence, they agree on what could be a catastrophic situation for coastal AND inland areas.

First for the NYC area, we are looking at a repeat of yesterday with cloudy skies, humid, chance of showers, a rumble of thunder, muggy, and highs near 80. Clouds and mugginess remain tomorrow with the chance of a shower, upper 70's. Clouds remain Friday, but we begin to dry our rain-wise, upper 70's again.

With Florence sinking well to the south of us, our weekend is looking pretty decent. Expect party to mostly cloudy skies, a little on the humid side, and highs in the low 80's both Saturday and Sunday.

As of this morning, Hurricane Florence maintains her Category 4 status and continues to look very healthy. She also remains on track to make landfall somewhere along the upper South Carolina coast to central North Carolina coast.

Hurricane Florence's Dangerous Dance

Models agree now that Florence will near or touch the coast between Wilmington and Morehead City, NC, but then gets suppressed back towards Myrtle Beach, SC. This is why everyone in the hurricane warning area and storm surge warning area MUST pay attention to the warnings and not focus on the initial landfall. Hurricane Florence will be bringing a lot of water and wind with her initially, so you could be away from the actual center and still feel Florence's full wrath. Remember, a Category 4 storm is capable of catastrophic damage. This is not an Irene or even a Sandy, which brought a lot of water but didn't have much else. Florence will be bringing the water, the wind, and the absolute power to level.
Where Florence goes after moving inland is still up for debate. However, models are now leaning towards bringing her south of Charlotte, NC and into interior SC. If this scenario plays out, inland areas of SC/NC could see tropical storm conditions, but the most important important issue will be historic and copious amounts of rain. Areas to the north and east of Florence's center will see the heaviest of the rain, along with severe thunderstorms and brief tornados. Mudslides will be an issue in the higher terrain, and widespread flash flooding will occur elsewhere. Again, be guided by your local officials as to where the safest place to evacuate will be according to flood history and topographies.

For coastal areas, surge will precede well ahead of a landfalling Florence, so the time to prepare and evacuate is now as tides will begin increasing today and tonight. Inland areas have a little extra time to prepare; but with 36-60hrs left, that time will go fast. So start making arrangements now and have everything in place if it looks as if the heaviest of rain is heading towards your area.
