SOUPY NYC TODAY FLORENCE CONTINUES DANGEROUS TREK

Good morning everyone. Stubborn gloom wants to hang around a little longer in the NYC area today, holding temps down a bit. Meanwhile, Hurricane Florence continues to chug along towards the Southeast coast, where devastation is expected for those who see the brunt of her awesome power.

A foggy morning and mostly cloudy day will hinder our ability to get into the 80's today. As expected, we'll have the chance of some showers and storms throughout the day, but the action will be spaced out and scattered. Look for highs into the upper 70's and muggy. For tomorrow, we go for a repeat in terms of precip, cloud-cover, and morning fog, but we could crack 80 with slightly warmer air moving in.

Clouds and showers hang around for Thursday with upper 70's again, but that has nothing to do with Hurricane Florence and just a continuation of our maritime flow; which will incidentally save us from Florence, but more on that below.

Hurricane Florence Continues Towards SE Coast

Florence remains on schedule for a late Thursday/early Friday arrival somewhere along the Southeast coast. The final spot where she makes landfall is still uncertain, but people shouldn't just focus on the center of circulation as Florence will affect a wide area.

Even as of now, the EURO and GFS models differ on where she will touch land, so it's important to take immediate action if you are on the coast between South Carolina and North Carolina. That being said, the VA and MD coasts are still a concern for me, especially if Florence makes landfall and/or moves slightly further north after making landfall. Have a plan to evacuate if needed and be guided by your local officials in terms of what type of surge/conditions to expect.

For those areas along the coast which do experience the power of the eye-wall and immediate NE quadrant of Hurricane Florence, everything not made of concrete and steel will be gone. This is not an exaggeration, this is reality. Just remember that when you're contemplating sticking around. Don't.

After she's done with the coastline, we'll have another facet of danger and destruction on our hands. Once Florence moves inland, she will wring out all of her rain onto interior sections of the mid-atlantic and southeast. This will cause major, widespread flooding, plus the prospect of mudslides in the higher, mountainous regions. Inland areas may also see tropical storm force winds, hurricane force gusts, and brief tornados.

On another note, I've been getting a lot of questions about the New York City area, and the long and short answer is, we remain safe. While a landfall in the Cape Hatteras area or NC/VA border area might give us a chance of scattered rain and breezy conditions, it is of little consequence. Our main issue will be enhanced tide, rip currents, heavy surf, and beach erosion.

Stay tuned as we follow Florence's progress.
