The code for a new Monero excavation bot has been found to direct its ill-gotten gains to a computer server at Kim Il Sung University, the first college in North Korea ever.
Malware University, North Korea
Alienvault delivered the proceeds to Kim Il Sung University on Monday. Alienvault said Monday that the lab has recently analyzed applications compiled on Christmas Eve 2017 (Monera Mine Software Installer). While it is true that these malware are common these days, researchers say they found that they sent mine decryption to Kim Il Sung University in Pyongyang, North Korea.
"Cryptocurrencies can provide a financial lifeline to a country that has been hit by sanctions and it is not surprising that North Korean universities are showing a clear interest in cryptocurrencies, I invited foreign experts to lecture. The installation program analyzed above may be the result of my most recent efforts. "
A usual suspect
Monero Mining Malicious code pays money to North Korea Kim Il Sung University. Monero has been the subject of recent media campaigns in the media. Many publishers around the world are turning criminals into new "cryptanalytic" abandons. North Korea is also marked as a hacker country responsible for most cyber attacks on Western targets.
Both sides are likely to be true, but skeptics will wonder if Pyongyang's demise is part of a cypher to gain popular approval for a sort of strike (cyber, financial or otherwise) on an isolated country. Even the Alienvault team "use the North Korean server to cheat" because its report does not prove that the protocol of Kim Il Sung University is the source of the software. "
