A few days ago, theguruasia sent me a message with a 0.001 transaction. The message is now nothing but completely nonsense characters. What could have led to this? Can memos be changed after they are posted? Or, could it be that, some kind of fault in the blockchain caused this?

That is an encrypted private message. You should be able to read it inside your wallet if steemit.com has your private memo key. Here some more technical information about it :

odd maybe she copy pasted an image or gif on accident and it posted the coding not sure I'm not great with computers or coding
