Curation Digest changes

in buildawhale •  7 years ago

As I’m sure you are all aware, @buildawhale was created by @themarkymark to fulfill two important needs of the Steemit Community; to help minnows gain visibility through the upvote-bot usage and to highlight solid, original content through the daily Curation Digest.

@buildawhale has achieved these goals in many ways. Minnows are using the upvote bot and gaining visibility through both the higher earnings of their posts and from the added bonus of being featured in the Daily Digest.

Unfortunately, @buildawhale is also being used for the shitposters and spammers. It’s making life difficult for our Curating team.

Our curators, we currently have a team of 6 including Chief Curators @nicnas and I (@bethalea), go through hundreds of URLs every day, searching for at least five good, original pieces from our fellow Steemians.

I am sorry to tell you that it’s difficult. Not that you aren’t out there, beloved Authors. The problem is that there are so many more shitposters and spammers, and everyone ends up on the same list for us to go through.

I have an idea about how to help us, help you. Yes, I know that’s a cheesy line from that movie… it also happens to be true. I can’t tell you how frustrated I have become, going through posts that are copied, plagarised or otherwise total crap, in order to find the shiny gem of originality.

I often use my 1 SBD sent to @buildawhale on a post I’ve found that I think deserves a boost of visibility and extra kudos to the author, and I have heard from others in our community who do the same.

The Curation Team at @buildawhale will be giving priority to those posts who were sent to us from someone other than the author.

It is my hope that our team will be able to feast upon more high quality content this way, and that the Steemit community will be enhanced by you, faithful reader, sending these gems our way. I call you now to support your community and authors you deem worthy by using the @buildawhale service to promote someone other than yourself.

What do you think? Do you hate this idea? If so, why? Do you love it? Again, why? Let’s start a real discussion about using our upvoting bot this way, as a vehicle to enhance our communities.

I nominate Jon Snow 1983, this post actually is a video so no reading. Sounds like a dope idea and could help people in Venezuela become part of the 21st century economy and other buzzword bullshit.

https://steemit.com/dtube/@jonsnow1983/cea5b22g

Wow... the comments on this post are Mind Blowing! I mean... Boom @themarkymark your patience with these people is exceptional. People need to read and understand the rules of the bot for crying out loud! And don't give me "tell me how it feels when you don't get a refund and if you feel the same" Heard that, and I've done that. I've been riding the line of upvoting posts in the last day so I am never too long separated from my SBD, and you know what? I sent some funds in too late and didn't get a vote. And I didn't cry about it. Because it is in the rules!

Anyway... to the point of the post.

I do think that it is a noble effort to try to curate the muck. Obviously I know where you are coming from. ;-) Knowing that this is an option, I may do it from time to time on posts that I love that, for one reason or another, don't qualify for Curie.

The problem is in the value of $1 SBD right now. People don't want to spend it on someone else if it is worth $13 USD. When you start taking that into account, it gets real expensive real fast. And curation rewards for front running the bot vote aren't going to cover that SBD.

On the other side, what if people just started cycling voting for each other instead of voting for themselves? As soon as you come up with a new policy and announce it, someone is going to figure out an exploit for it. If someone starts a second account just to send bot votes to their main account, then you have to start and maintain a blacklist for people who are trying to game the system. Too much effort for you guys again.

Can you have buildawhale self report? Set up some parameters of what sort of posts you find appealing based on word count, tags, or other measurables through SteemSql that would help narrow the field? SQL queries have been a game changer for Curie, and has made our lives so much easier. seems like you could design something that queries the database for
Upvote from: Buildawhale Post Age < 6 days, Minimum Word Count > 200 OR Minimum Image Count > 3, Vote from cheetah=false.

I don't design the queries, I just use what is provided to me, but doing something like that I am sure Marky could whip up, and that would give you a baseline. If you can't find 5 from that, then you take a deeper dive.

Just a thought.

Thanks @mikepm74,

For the curation, it is at the point where there are just so many bids coming in and most of it is very low effort. I've wanted to do some AI for a while now to reduce the noise so we can focus on the the better content and spend less time doing it.

hey @mikepm74!! I have been racking my brain to try to find a way to cull the unneccessary baloney from our lists to look at, and in actuality, had a brand new thought the moment after this post went live, lol. So I'm sure we'll see some variations of this change.

Marky is highly capable of creating the queries like you mentioned, however I felt like it was important to keep human eyes on the posts as much as possible. Word count, for instance... I've come across some amazing photography with hardly any words at all that I found moving enough to curate for the digest.

I look forward to the next evolution!

xoxo mikey ;)

b.

yeah that is why you do an OR statement in the query, where it gives you word count OR at least X number of images. That would knock out the one line and one picture posts.

Human eyes are extremely important, otherwise curation wouldn't really be curation. It's just creating the tools that get rid of the stuff you know you weren't going to select anyway.

I'm sure you will come up with something great!

Couldnt delete my comment, but this is just to confirm, yeah I received your Upvote.
Thanks

thanks for updating. The windows are 2 hours 40 minutes and even once the bot starts upvoting it can take some time.

Hmm okay you welcome dude

It is my hope that our team will be able to feast upon more high quality content this way.

Yes! Yes! YES!!!! Please! My wife is sitting next to me browsing through post after post. It's fun finding that rare find, but the amount of junk we sift through is really discouraging. If someone finds a post so inspiring and well written to buy a build-a-whale for them, that is an indication that it's worth the time to highlight. It would also allow curators to keep up with the posts if there are fewer to go through.

In conclusion? YES!

@ironshield

Hi @buildawhale !
I really appreciate your service and I'm aware of your refund policy. However I'm still asking you to kindly refund my 5 sbd that I send with the wrong url.
I did also send you an additional 4 sbd with the correct url.. maybe instead of refunding you can upvote as if i send you 9 sbd?

We are unable to do refunds, and we cannot change bids or influence how our service votes. It is an automated system and votes based on what has been bid.

I am sorry.

Merry christmas then ;) hehe

we have different opinions. First and for most, we should consider the power of the creator team @ned , for 2 years running this site, I think he did well for the policies and the good for the community. I know I am somehow posted just a picture for a challenge but I think it is clear and accepted by the rules of steemit. Minnows and newbie in writing will one to be affected in this case(including me). So I think, we should follow what the rules are. What is the use of making a long blog if it was plagiarized?

Hahhahahhah

a very useful post

You sent 0.805 SBD, our minimum bid is 1 SBD

It takes up to 2 hours 40 minutes for our bidding round to finish and us to start voting. We are just wrapping up the voting of this round.

I received the upvote, thanks again.

Okay thanks for your response.

We cannot provide refunds for user errors. I am sorry.

wow . tks

NO. STOP IT.

Dear Buildawhale team, I sent 2 SBD without memo mistakenly. Please refund. Thanks in advance.

You can read about our refund policy here.

Thanks but please redund this time and I will never ask for refund again for mistakes.

Waiting please.

@ghazanfar.ali the answer is no.

I am more than willing to do that but should I not re-steem first?

resteem the post you are going to bid for?

I am committed to Steem and try to do quality posts but have not yet found a way to build sp without using bots and spending steem$. Does paying a bot to upvote a post I did not author or resteem benefit me in anyway. Again I do want to help build Steemit.

It might not directly help you, but it would help the friend or good content creator that you find quality. This in turn helps build better quality content overall. While this may seem like a waste it is a great thing.

For example: When you find a post that deserves a large upvote but your vote just isnt big enough. You can send in an sbd or two and its like you are giving them a larger vote. But also now they have a better chance of getting curated too b/c you are vouching for this post.

The post had an invalid URL.

https://steemit.com/food/@subratabarua/simple-and-delicious-fish-fry-and-crabs-fry#comments

The "#comments" at the end is not a value Steem post, the website will redirect it, but the api will respond as an invalid post.

@subratabarua

Hi you tell me I give you comment link. Sorry it's my mistake. Now I give you without comment link:::
https://steemit.com/food/@subratabarua/simple-and-delicious-fish-fry-and-crabs-fry

Plz upvote me i am w8 for your reply

We are unable to do a refund or manual vote on user errors, sorry.

ok thanks for your reply.. plz finally try again caz i am new user steemit.com ....

Hey @buildawhale i send you 1.000 SBD last 5 hours ago. But you dont vote my post. Please check my wallet history https://steemit.com/@rifathemu/transfers

This is my memo: - https://steemit.com/colorchallenge/@rifathemu/good-morning-bangladesh

Sent refund. The big was valid but came in as a dust vote.

The window was so busy and our vote weight is so high ($500 now), that the smaller 1 SBD bids were too small to be an "effective vote" and it got rejected. We haven't had this issue in a long time and the only solution would be to raise our minimum bid again. Luckily, that amount of bidding at once almost never happens. I made an adjustment to our threshold so it hopefully won't happen again.

Since this was not a user error, I am able to provide a refund.

@buildawhale Then please back to my 1 SBD. Because i am new on Steemit. 1 sbd is more important in my account. Please back me my 1 sbd.

I said I did.

"Sent refund."

@Buildawhale I sent yesterday 1 SBD with memo,
but not upvoted my post, Please upvote this one. https://steemit.com/steemstem/@gilliant/heart-s-makers-medicine-3d

Post was too old, we cannot vote past 6 days 12 hours, the STEEM blockchain won't allow it. We are unable to change the vote to something else.

I think there would be no problem in changing the vote to another publication, but thanks for the help. :)

I think the idea will somehow be accepted and not be accepted by steemians. I just got a gut feel that it might not be supported by those who earn underrated here.

It isn't an exclusive policy, just a preference.

Sir i send 1 SBD with memo please cheak

It takes up to 2 hours 40 minutes for us to start voting. There is still 72 minutes until we start voting in this round.

I think this is a good idea, but I don't know if people will actually do that. I think they will still send you sbd for their own posts.

Your the bast @buildawhale

Wow

I must agree 100% as someone who ONLY posts 100% original content, (of quality in my mind), it is frustrating to see some "shitposts" raking in the dough..

But i can understand how overwhelming the inflow of bids are.. welp, good luck! Hope you keep finding the good ones!

P.S. All of my work! ;] (finger guns)

postingan yang bagua good luck brader
