Шерпите са тибетска етническа група произхождащта от от източен Тибет и мигрирали към Непал през последните 300-400 години.Занимават се със скотовъдство( тибетските бикове Як), земеделие и търговия. Те населяват най високите планински райони на Хималаите. Понеже на тези височини (3000- 6000) метра надморска височина, кислорода е в по малко количество, бели дробове са придобили способност да абсорбират по голямо количество кислород от останалите хора. Поради тази причина всички експедиции за покоряване на върховете във Хималаите, се извършва с помоща на тези хора. Използват ги за носачи на провизии, кислородни бутилки и т.н. Без помоща на тези мъже, повечето експедиции биха били невъзможни. Но те остават винаги в сянка, макар че истинските рекорди са тяхно дело. Рекордът поставя шерпа Long Dorje Sherpa който 14 пъти е изкачил връх Еверес заедно със различни експедиции.
