Tennis elbow

If I talk about tennis elbow then this is another name of lateral epicondylitis. It is a condition in which tendons most commonly, present in your elbow gets inflamed and they cause painful sensations in this area. If you are thinking that it can only occur to those players who play tennis then it's wrong because anyone can develop this problem.

Types of tennis elbow

• If I talk about first type then this is acute type of tennis elbow in which patient suddenly feels painful sensations at lateral side of elbow which normally radiate and this type can occur because of sudden stress or strain due to any injury.
• If I talk about second type then this is chronic type of tennis elbow in which patient will develop swelling and pain at lateral side of elbow gradually and it will get severe if patient will ignore it day by day.

Symptoms

• If I talk about first symptom I have learned from lesson then this is pain occurrence at elbow that radiate and go in forearm.
• If I talk about another symptom then this is tenderness sensation means patient will feel pain when someone touch lateral side of elbow.
• If I talk about another symptom that can associate with this condition then this is weakness in muscles of forearm and wrist.

Causes

• This condition can be caused by repetitive strain at tendons of elbow most commonly while playing tennis, squash like plays etc.
• This is condition can be caused by poor economic and biomechanics which can cause strain to tendons of your elbow.
• This condition can be caused by those task in which you are gripping twisting and lifting repeatedly.

Treatment

• If I talk about first protocol of treatment then it is rest and icing for causing reduction in pain and swelling.
• If I talk about next step of treatment then it is definitely physical therapy in which there will be stretching ,strengthening exercises designed by doctor according to patient condition.
• If I talk about last step of treatment then there can be medications use for relieving pain and corticosteroid injections can be used for reducing swelling.

Tennis elbow diagnosis

History taking and clinical evaluation

• If I talk about first step for making diagnosis then it is always taking history of patient that is there any trauma occurred at elbow before feeling pain and inflammation and if it is not occurred then doctor will ask that from how much time you are feeling pain and what are the factors that increase or decrease your pain sensations according to observation of patient.

• If I talk about clinical evaluation then Dr will ask from patient to pinpoint exact area from where pain is originating and if it is radiating then what is route of pain. After asking it doctor will ask patient to grade his pain according to his severity from 1-10 and to tell about pain type that it is dull aching ,burning or stabbing.

Physical examination and special tests

• If I talk about physical examination then now patient inquiry is over and this is all about what doctor is examining itself so in physical examination doctor needs to check for any signs of redness, swelling and tenderness at palpation if these are present at outside or lateral of elbow.
• If I talk about first special test then it's cozen's test which will be performed by commanding patient to perform wrist extension and then resisting it and feeling increase in pain by placing your hand at lateral epicondyle.
• If I talk about second special test then this is Mill's test then you will command patient to flex his wrist and forearm and then try to extend his wrist against resistance. If upon doing it patient pain is worsening then test is positive.
• If I talk about another special test than it is resisted wrist extension in which wrist strength will be monitored by performing extension against resistance.

Imaging tests

• If I talk about x-ray then it can be helpful for checking any fracture that can also cause inflammation and redness.
• If I talk about MRI then it can be helpful for checking if there is any rupture of soft tissue including tendon is present which is causing inflammation.
• If I talk about ultrasound then it can be helpful for checking thickness of tendon which shows inflammation.

All these diagnostic approaches are helpful for reaching to final outcome!

Exercises I am performing

Wrist and ball squeeze

Wrist flexor stretch

Wrist isometrics

Reviews of exercises

If I talk about my first exercise then it was ball and wrist squeeze which I performed and I was feeling that this exercise is demanding strength of my hand and wrist muscles so I felt increase in strength of my hand and wrist muscles after 5 repetitions

If I talk about second exercise then it was wrist flexor stretch which I performed upon holding it and I feel my muscles of forearm are relaxing and gaining more flexibility after performing it. If I talk about third exercise wrist isometrics then after performing it I feel again increase in strength of my risk and hand muscles just like ball and wrist squeeze.

¡Saludos amigo!🤗
