Still On Mentoring
Yesterday I told you how important it is for you to have a mentor if you are going to succeed in life and in business. I wrote that out of personal experience. I have mentors and I have also seen people around me making steady progress because of the same reason.
Today we shall continue by adding a short note to the concept of mentoring.
We shall attempt to answer 2 questions:
- How Do I Know My Mentor?
- Who Make the First Move?
To know your mentor is not so difficult. You first need to be cleared about what you want. If business is what you want to learn, a successful business man or woman is the choice. If it is marriage, then a successful couple is the answer. You pick a mentor in the area of your need.
As to who makes the move, is it the mentor that will call me or am I the one to go to him to request for mentoring? It can be both ways. But sincerely, it works better when you as a mentee makes the choice. You prayerfully think of what you want and prayerfully think of who should help you get it. You just approach him and summit yourself.
If you are the one that make the choice, submitting to him or her come naturally and easily. You obey him or her without struggle and the commitment required in successful mentoring relationship become easy too.
It is important to add here that mentors are not father Christmas, if you need money go to cooperative society. What you are in mentoring relationship for is more than money, it is life transforming knowledge, therefore, be focused.
Also, mentors are not angels. You are likely going to find weaknesses as you get closer to him and to his family. The answer to this as well is focus. You are there to learn business, so, mind your business.
To get the best out of mentoring relationship, you must be very inquisitive. Ask questions and be attentive to him as he provide answers. Keep all appointment, be faithful, be teachable, be humble and always show appreciation.
