A lot of businesses want to grow, but majority of them, do not know how. And they getting in trap of growth, when they want but don't know how. That desire of growth affects all business, because existing strategies start getting more shift towards desired goals. Desire of growth can create fake strategy, where businesses will be servicing one segment of the customers forgetting about another. It is not good strategy, as in long term businesses loose they uniqueness concentrating only on the way of making growth happen. In long term usually customers from growth segment decline and other customers which suppose to be in another segment are disappear, because businesses did not pay attention to that segment when growth happens in different segment. Attempt of competition in many ways but not delivering core, leading to the business resource wastage and incompleteness and underperformance in all areas of business over the long term. In short term, yes, business can take more profit in particular segment, but in long term it is slow decline in overall performance. The key point to note, if businesses decide to grow, it is better always remain with the core competency and when new opportunities arise do not jump into with all resources.
