With most of us spending 100 hours on our smartphones each month and checking them up to 150 times a day, it’s little surprise that a new study is showing that these tiny devices are now starting to push us towards buying stuff – especially the small stuff, little guilty pleasures that won’t break the bank but make us a little bit happier inside.
That includes you, by the way – don’t deny it, we all do it!
It all comes down to the emotion that phones bring out in us. Unlike desktop internet browsing, the whole experience is a lot more tactile with a whole host of buzzes, beeps, vibrations, and little anchors that are hardwired to make us do stuff.
And in the case of buying stuff, big brands have totally worked out how to combine all this into a powerful compulsion to buy. See, we’re meant to check out phones repeatedly, which makes it a habit, and because the feedback loop is often far better articulated on them, it delivers a better experience.
When it comes to buying, it’s easy to push people closer to the decision, particularly if you leverage social media and it’s myriad ways to notify, share, and follow. Impulse buyers quite literally can’t help themselves, and may even share their wonderful purchase for you, boosting your business just that little bit more.
All you have to do is watch what the big brands are doing – because they are investing millions into this – and follow suite. The smartphone might be a tool that’s causing society to decay if you listen to some people, but there’s no doubting it’s a powerful tool that is a boon for the ecommerce sector – so get your buzz on!
