This Is How You Sell Courses On Your SitesteemCreated with Sketch.

in business •  7 years ago

Selling your expertise by creating video courses and selling them on your own site is one of the best ways to make passive income online.

The online learning market made $51.5 billion in 2016, source.

How do you make the courses?

To make the course you can use screen recording video editors such as Screenflow or Camtasia and a good microphone. Create a step-by-step narrative on a subject that you're passionate about and divide it into 15 to 35 videos of 3 to 10 minutes long.

I also advise you to use the cloud for video storage (you'll thank me later). So upload you MP4s to Dropbox, Drive or Amazon S3.

How do you sell the courses?

The easiest way is with a solution like Teachable or Thinkific.

The hard way is to set up a WordPress membership site plug-in with video storage. There is a baffling array of WordPress membership site plug-ins. Trust me, I spent 3 years down that rabbit hole and now I'm so glad I use Teachable.

Here's my Teachable site. What do you think?

Why I love Teachable

  1. It makes it easy to create courses. You upload the videos you put in the cloud (in my case Dropbox) with one click and there's your course already!
  2. It makes it easy to create coupons. You can easy change the courses' price with a special coupon that will expire at a certain time. Offering cut priced products for short periods of time to an email list is one of the best way to sell online.
  3. It makes it easy to integrate with an email marketing platform. So you can get someone's email by offering them a free course and you can market to them paid courses at a later date.
  4. It makes it easy to get paid!!! You can offer your customers credit card or PayPal on checkout. Sorry, as yet no Bitcoin acceptance. Believe me, I've asked when Teachable are going to manage crypto payments. So far no answer. :(

Warning

Some of the above links are affiliate links so I'll get a commission if anyone buys through them but I doubt they will! :)

It seems that Udemy isn't as profitable as it used be.

Yeah it isn't for me @iliasdiamantis but it is for some people. And it does make me a few thousand per month and I do very little on there for that :)

I have been using udemy, but might be adding these two extra platforms. just found you and started following you

thank you @johnnyray. I've been on Udemy for 3-4 years, I think. The difference between Udemy and selling courses with Teachable is that you can charge what you want for your courses on Teachable however you have to do the marketing. You sell on a course on your own Teachable site and the customer is yours, you get their email address and you can upsell to them as long as they don't unsubscribe... and you get all (or most) of the price that they paid.

I understand and why i might be moving over. Just need time to make the move. There are some other systems I am looking at also for major courses and coaching programs, etc.

yeah but @johnnyray you don't have to "move over" unless I've misunderstood you. You can sell your courses on Udemy and your own Teachable site at the same time (as well as a host of other online learning platforms).

yes, many options, and always moving people over to my full coaching service, you see see my site on my profile. I'm going on a cruise in a few days and will work hard when we get back in 2 weeks.

oh wow, that's awesome, Johnny, let me know if you need any help when you get back :)

I sure will, as I am sure I will have some questions.
