Who is our customer? and why is it important.

in business •  7 years ago

This is a question we should ask ourselves regularly.

In seeking to understand and meet our customers needs we should constantly be analyzing who our customer is.

Some area we should regularly unpack and seek to quantify are:

1.Demographics

  • age
  • gender
  • marital status
  • occupation
  • income level
  • ethnicity
  • etc.
    2.Organizational
  • Public or private sector
  • trade or proffesional
  • wholesale or retail
  • etc.
    3.Geographic
  • location
  • population dencity
  • area generalized attributes
  • etc.
    4.Psychographic
  • personality
  • lifestyle
  • interests
  • attitudes
  • opinions
  • etc.
    5.Behavioural
  • buying preferences
  • brand loyalty
  • benefit peferences
    -etc.

As we constantly seek to understand more about our customers we will be better able to detect and adapt our offering to their changing needs. This will make it more likely that we will remain relevant in a changing environment and will also make it easier to discover new services and products we can offer to our customers. As we understand our customers better we will also be able to produce more accurate messaging, experiences and render more relevant support.

Hi, @sme! Thank you for the post. How do you understand who your customer is? Do you hire investigators? Do you gather focus groups? Do you ask friends and families? Do you ask marketing professionals?
Every startuper and every businessman should understand who the customer is. Me personally as a part of startup team just think logically 1) what is the target auditory for my product? 2)taking into account specific advantages of my product specialise who my customer is. But the problem is that it's just my theory. If I fail the project fails also. Are there any opportunities to make sure my theory is accurate?

Thanks a lot for sharing your valuable post..I appreciate your post my friend...
Varry on your creativity in steemit..

This is nice, I understand for any business, the customers needs and preferences are always priority to someone's own needs. Thanks for listing what we should consider.

We also need to have a solid mission statement for ourselves. Otherwise we may be too tempted to change our core values, and lose our customers all-together!

Customers are King. And also customer is always right. That's the business rules. Wish better business.

Public dealing probably you listen from anyone say that is much difficult but if most of companies heir people who have ability to entertain their customers. Because they know the importance of that customer... Customers are basic fundamental in the growth of any organization

Hey, SME!

Well, I will just call you that since it seems your account is more about business than it is personal. No shits though.

So, speaking of knowing our customers, I think you have well mentioned some really great things to look out for when strategizing ways to get to know how customers. And believe it or not, knowing your customer is the singular most important factor that tells us how successful your business would be in the next couple of years from now.

Creating a customer avatar or buyer personal is thence important, and one of the coolest ways to do that methinks is in taking demographical approach.

This is definitely a great post man. Don't know how to upvote would have done so...but thanks for sharing this man!

Enter the workplace as a customer every day and identify the shortcomings yourself. You have good ideas.

understanding the place of offering quality service to our customers is very key, to actualizing great and sufficient productivity, i advise everyone going in for one business or the other, seek to be more interested in satisfying your customers than just being in business, your kind gesture and willingness to help business owners is very key. God bless you @sme

I have been learning more and more about my customers for the past 6 years. It is always important to put yourself in the customer's shoes. I recently made a post about what I have learned about my customers in this post: https://steemit.com/business/@finkgraphics/7-tips-about-customer-service-i-picked-up-from-selling-custom-apparel

You are right that you need to know these attributes of your customers, but it is even more important to research and understand how your customers go through the buying process for what you offer. Whether it is readers deciding whether to open your post, or IT people deciding which software to buy, your buyer has certain things that trigger the need to do something, has desired outcomes they’d like to achieve, has decision criteria used to narrow options and select one, has objections that raise doubt, and has buying process steps that they go through. It is only by having this insight that you are able to market and sell what you offer successfully and at scale.
