"Enthusiasm takes work." That summary could apply to almost any aspect of life. It applies to the great American desire to achieve success as well as any other aspect of life that we are willing to put into the process. One of the things that I have found to be very useful is to think of my business or job as a kind of journey. I understand that this can sound simplistic, but it has helped me to become more successful. In each business or job that I have held, I have gradually progressed from being an individual who was responsible for a few small steps to becoming the business or job that I am today.
For instance, when I started at Best Buy, which is now known as electronics largest retailer, I started as an employee in the customer service department. As a young associate, I put off getting my actual uniform until much later. I figured that I would "scratch my head if something went wrong," and I figured that I wouldn't have a problem with it since I was the dumbest person in the building. On a lucky day, I got to wear my favorite dress shirt to work, which I thought would motivate me to do better. That's when I learned that wearing a great dress shirt to work, along with a great hat, tie, and socks will not get you promoted to Customer Service Manager, but it will get you farther than most of the other applicants.
Small gestures such as these combined with the power of your biggest desires will bring you a great deal of success. It is not enough to just know what the greatest meaning is, but to act on that understanding. For example, I know that the greatest meaning of becoming a best selling writer is that I could change the lives of those who read my books. I don't just think that's an interesting title; I live the experience every day of thinking about becoming a best selling author.
The difference between the little steps that I've outlined above and the kind of overnight success many are seeking is simple: Enthusiasm. I don't believe that writing a book is going to dramatically affect my future, but I do believe that the act of writing is going to dramatically change the lives of the people who read it. I can take that away from them. You can take that from them, too. What matters is that you put your effort into becoming a great business person, and the rest will follow.
So, the next time that you feel as though you are at your wit's end, remember that the most important thing to begin with is Enthusiasm. Don't ever give up. When you begin a business venture, you have to expect that it will require hard work. Don't expect that there will be instant results. For the most part, the only way for a business to succeed long term is to treat it as a business, and slowly begin to put in the small amounts of work needed in order to build a great business, and then over time, invest more of your profits into advertising, growing your company, and ultimately creating greater success for you and your company.
So, begin putting in your Enthusiasm today. Work at your business. Don't worry about the critics. Work on your book. Work on your marketing strategies. Invest your efforts to grow your business, and don't be afraid to invest a bit of money into the business as well.
Remember, if you're not enjoying what you're doing, change it! If you're not enjoying the work that you are doing, change it. If you're not enjoying what you are doing, change it. Keep on trying, and before you know it, Enthusiasm will take you to the point that you'll be able to say and do all those famous words that you always wanted to say.
