The Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is placed in the Sampoiniet Conservation Response Unit (CRU), Aceh Jaya District, Aceh Province.

The population of Sumatran elephants in the wild is currently estimated at about 1,700 individuals and the number continues to shrink due to the hunt for ivory and is killed because it is considered a pest.
