Marching with diploma is definitely the proof that a student conquers his or her college life and is now ready for the new chapter of their life. Finishing their study also serves as their ticket for the so called “real world”, however high number of graduates as of today was facing numerous number of problems. Problems like lack of experience, job-skill mismatch and the employer’s high expectation of the newly graduate are some examples.

Job-skill mismatch is defined as the gap between a person’s skills and the job’s description. This problem is boosting its number in the Philippines as of this year. A labor group warned that about 1.2 million college and vocation graduates this year will struggle in getting a job due to the growing number of mismatch between their skills and the job skills that the employers in the Philippines wants.

Academic institutes and educational organizations mostly provide theories, principles and ideas which is not all needed once a student starts working. Technical skills, conceptual skills, ability to work under pressure and the ability to manage time efficiently are some skills that a student might not acquire inside the school premises. Having the deficiency to provide this skills, On the Job Training became a very important course requirement of a student.

On the Job Training (OJT) is the process of applying what a student obtain inside the school with the supervision of a professional trainer or an experienced employee in a certain institution. Students are allowed to do work training in a specific period of time and it can be done in a public or private sectors. The students and an institution or organization are bound in a memorandum of agreement where trainees will be trained to gain new knowledge related to their courses. This program let students do hands-on training where they can experience what kind of environment they’re going through after they graduate with their courses.
The said program centers in practical learning where they can gain new knowledge and skills. Relative to this, organizations and institutes that accept OJT interns also gain benefits from this program. There are many kinds of institutions and organizations where a student can possibly apply for, it can be a private or public sector, it can be a small or big companies and also universities can be the workplace of students. One of this is the Cavite State University – Carmona Campus.
Cavite State University – Carmona Campus is an educational organization where students can also apply as a trainee or intern and will be deploy inside the campus. Inside the said campus, students taking up computer related courses can enhance their skills with the help of their instructors.

The main objective of the trainee is to gain new skills and knowledge inside the organization that can be used for future purposes.
Specifically, the trainee aims to:

  1. be exposed in the environment where an employee will work with different teams;
  2. develop the value of professionalism and commitment;
  3. be exposed to the actual working environment in computer programming;
  4. apply the theories, principles and idea obtain in studying in a certain workplace; and
  5. get a satisfactory grade of 70 or higher for the student evaluation.

The CvSU – Carmona don’t have a written SOP for their trainees as they begin to work, with this the trainees are just asking to its instructors that are knowledgeable on a specific matter. However, trainees make sure that their taking tasks safely to avoid bigger problems.

THE TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Daily Journal
June 14, 2017
Day 1
I only thought that this day will only be an interview for my application as an On the job Trainee (OJT) in Cavite State University Carmona Campus, but it ended up to be my first day. The interview last until 12 noon and had asked us to be back at exactly 1 pm, because our duty will start at the said time. All the trainees were asked to put all the computer peripherals inside the faculty office in the Room 106 for the segregation and clean up. Checking all the System Units, Keyboards and other peripheral’s condition was our main duty. Having 5 computer laboratories will take a lot of time, so we are assigned in different laboratories. We are not grouped with our friends, because it will be part of our training. I know that outside the school, total strangers will be my workmates and it will be hard for us if we don’t know how to deal with them. I was grouped with Joy Claire Cardeño and Mark David Despues and was assigned in the Room 204. Different persons as workmate might be hard, but despite of our different personalities and attitudes I can see that we all can work as one. Being ready for the new chapter of our life will be the best for us.
June 15, 2017
Day 2
This was the first day of having an assigned laboratory to work with my workmates. But before we proceed to our designated areas we first segregate the papers from the faculty office. We have segregated all the trash that can be sell to not. After segregating we proceed in our designated work stations, troubleshooting, formatting and installing software was our main objective for that day. Troubleshooting is the first thing that we decide to do, as we still yet don’t have our Operating System on our hands. Installing software is a problem for us, because no one have prepared the installer. It’s almost afternoon when we provide the installer of the Operating System that we are going to install, but unfortunately despite of providing many flash drives only one works. Having this problem, we end up in cleaning the computer laboratories for the sake of making ourselves busy on the time of our duty. This day I have learned that as an Information technology student, I must provide installers even though someone is assigned to give. Having initiative in work is not bad at all.
June 19, 2017
Day 3
On this first day of the week, we continued to our work in our assigned work station which is Room 204. Despite of bringing more flash drives, we still don’t manage to produce at least one working flash drive. We decided to let Mark and Claire do the formatting of the computers as I try to troubleshoot the not working computers. As I opened the not working system units I was shocked, because many chords are not connected in the motherboard. Somehow, I managed to fix four (4) not working computers. After out lunch break we start installing application to the formatted computers. Almost all the computers in our designated station was finished, but there are few that still need to fix, format and install applications. This day was really a productive day to me, I have learned that small mistakes in assembling system units can lead to wrong inventories.
June 20, 2017
Day 4
Today, we have continued to format and install applications for the computers. As we finished installing all the application we decide to scan for viruses, malwares and other threat for the computers. Also, we made maintenance for the computers, we opened all the computers to see if it can last for eleven (11) hours straight and luckily no one shut down. Mr. Opella together with Mr. Abril also dropped by in our workstation, they have advised us to check if the applications work fairly. With Mr. Opella’s advice we decided to check all the computers if the installed applications compile correctly. We have encountered some computers that don’t simulate correctly so we reinstalled the application. In today’s event, I have learned that not all successful installation was a success. Computers are still computers that encounters problem inside their system.
June 21, 2017
Day 5
Fifth day as an On the Job Trainee at Cavite State University – Carmona Campus and we are assigned to finish the works in the room 204. There was a general meeting for all the 3rd year students like us but we are allowed not to attend the said meeting as we are at the campus and we might not encounter any problem in our training. As we have finished the installation and troubleshooting on our assigned laboratory (Room 204) I just helped the other group assigned in the Room 203. We are assigned to have an inventory of all the computer peripherals in the said laboratory, also we balanced the number of computers in the Room 203 and Room 204. But as we transferred the computers we encountered small problems, lacking of communication inside a team can lead to wasting time and effort. We have transferred computers several times from our laboratory and the other group’s laboratory, it is because of some peripherals that seems to be in a working condition but counted as not working.
After our lunch, the two groups were asked to go in the Room 104. As we arrived in the said laboratory we are truly surprised with the mess, so messy that we don’t know where we should start. no labels of the working computers, peripherals also files, installers and drivers are also on the said room. Knowing that we might encounter the same problem in the morning, we all agreed to segregate all the working computer peripherals, non-working computer peripherals, files, drivers and installers. Time passed quickly that we didn’t finish segregating on that day.
June 22, 2017
Day 6
As we started our duty we continued segregating the computer peripherals, and started to fix computers. Having many not working computer peripherals, I tried to troubleshoot the system units and some do different stuff than mine like trying to fix some keyboards. Von Macario one of my workmate in Room 104 is a big help, I have learned many things from him. I have learned how to diagnose problems, if the system unit’s problem is its Random Access Memory or Hard Disk. It’s a very productive day for me, in total we fixed seven (7) system units, all of this system units might be in trash if we don’t manage to fix all of them. After that we started to format all the computers and started to install new Operating System.
June 27, 2017
Day 7
From a four (4) day vacation we started our day in installing applications in the working computers of the Room 104. As we installed the applications we encounter problem in installing the Visual Studio 2013. Von said that the problem might be because of the Operating System that we have installed, because of this we tried to seek help from the instructors and Mr. Alonel Hugo agree with the idea of Von. After that Mr. Alonel tried to find the product key of the said Operating System and he luckily find one, and we started to re-install the Operating System in all the computers. Our effort was wasted because of the single mistake that we have made on the other day, after that we also re installed all the application in the computers. Today I have learned that as an Information technology student we must first try to find serial key in all the application and installers that we are going to install.
June 28, 2017
Day 8
Installing was our main objective for this day because of what happened yesterday. Moment later Mr. Jhumel Ignas asked us to clean the Audio Visual Room in Room 301, I volunteered as well as Junar for the task because it will help us a lot for our thesis. As we cleaned the room we figured many things about its Network Architecture. We really have a big problem in terms of its network topology but I am glad that I have volunteered for cleaning the room. it might not be a problem, because we have found out that all the connections are made in a certain place which is in the server. All of the switch that are used to connect the computers are there and we can easily manipulate the connection from there. After cleaning the Audio Visual Room, we continued installing the additional applications and have a meeting with Mr. Jhumel Ignas. Today might not be a very productive day for me as a trainee but I’m very happy for our thesis, because we can do the architecture that we prefer the most.
June 29, 2017
Day 9
We are almost done in installing applications in the Room 104 from the other day so we just continue the installation. After we finished the installation I have tried all the computers if the application is running smoothly and correctly. I tried to write some codes to check if the programming languages are compiling. After checking all the computers, Junar and I tried the remote desktop application installed in the laboratory. We managed to make it run and we are truly amazed that the application truly can remotely control the client’s desktop. We also came up with better ideas because of this application. Moments later we are asked to clean the room, and we transferred all the files, drivers and computer peripherals inside the faculty room. Together with Junar, we went to the library for inspecting the computers. Having many times left before our duty ends, we make UTP cables for the library’s computers so that we can finish early for our next duty. Making working UTP cables is really hard, that we end up to make only one. In our next duty I will do my best to finish in no time because base on our Gantt chart we must start developing system next week.
July 03, 2017
Day 10
As for this day, we are asked to have an inventory to all the computer laboratories of the campus. We have listed all the computer’s serial number pasted at the back of each monitors and system units. Together with Mark and Claire, we are assigned in our previous workstation located in Room 204. I’m the one that looked for the monitor and system unit’s serial numbers while, on the other hand Mark looked for the mouse, keyboards and Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) of each computer and Claire is the one who encodes it in the laptop. I listed all the serial number in a piece of paper, because I thought that we will manage to finish it a way easier.
After finishing the said inventory, me and Junar go to the Osas to troubleshoot a Pc that is according to them is not working. We carried down the said system unit, but the system unit is on a perfect condition. We performed a preventive maintenance for the said system unit and found out that its Random Access Memory (RAM) was not cut perfectly. With this I think that it has times that its RAM was not being read by the system unit. Also we are grouped to different stations and I was assigned in the library.
In this day, I have realized that if we are going to purchase system units we must also check every single part of it. It might work perfectly, but time will come that problem will come due to its parts.
July 04, 2017
Day 11
11th day of my On the Job Training, but some personal matters occur, because of this I got to work at already 1 pm making me lost 5 hours. As I entered the premises, I directly went to my working station located at the library. There we restrict sites that the students can use, we have restricted the social media sites so that students will only use it for educational purposes. We are also asked to create a LAN connection for the dean’s office. We have use the RJ-45 that I purchase, but Ms. Hernandez insists to pay it even though I don’t really mind using it. We are also asked by the librarian to provide a network connection for two computers, because we are running out of time measuring the length of the cable that were going to use is the task that we done.
On this day, I have learned that even small amount of money must be paid if it is for the school.
July 05, 2017
Day 12
Junar Deseo and I are asked by Mr. Ignas to install the library system for the library, but we don’t manage to install it. First of all, we don’t manage to see the installer for the said system and also its database is also a problem. With this matters, we ended up in encoding the newspapers and magazines information. We managed to finish it as the day ends. After going home we try to ask Mr. Jhumel Ignas regarding the system that we need to install in the library and he said that the developer will personally drop in the campus to install the said system.
It’s not a productive day though, but I think that simple and easy to understand installers is a must. Having a complicated installer might result to future problems. Also I am looking forward that the developer of the system will arrive the next day.
July 06, 2017
Day 13
Today was the last day of the week, our 13th day and finally my 120th hour as a trainee. Exactly 2 weeks will end my training in the CvSU – Carmona Campus, and today we are asked to try installing the language and database used by the developer of the library system which is Visual Studio 2013 and SQL Server 2012. Installing this software give us a problem due to its installed Operating System which is windows 7, this operating system don’t support the software so we end up in reformatting the computer. It takes time in installing the operating system and the two software but we ended up nothing, again we failed to install the system for the library.
As we came back from our lunch break, we end up in encoding books in some curriculums. We encode the books that is related to specific subjects. Having the book’s title as the basis is really a hard job. We consumed all our remaining time in encoding but we don’t manage to finish it, I also think that I don’t reach the half of my task.
Seeing the list of all books in the library really gives me idea that there are many books that I can use for the development of my system. I thought visiting the library once in a while is a good idea.
July 10, 2017
Day 14
The fifth week of our duty as a trainee starts today, as for this day we continue our unfinished work in the library. Also we are expecting the developer of the said library system to come and install his or her system. Time has passed and it takes me until 4:30 pm in the afternoon to finish the assigned tasks for me. Encoding books for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) seems very hard for me as I don’t know a number of their subjects. On the other hand, it gives me idea on what BSCS’s student course is like as I read some of the textbooks from their curriculum. As our duty ends for this day, the developer of the library system didn’t arrive at all, it seems really hard for the clients if the developer of their system didn’t provide the annual on how to install their system. I will really take note this matter in developing our system so further problems will not occur.
July 11, 2017
Day 15
As I manage to finish the tasks given to me the other day, we are assigned to Room 204. At the said laboratory no task was given to us, so we try to get busy in this day. Some of us make paper works such as narrative report and weekly journals, but I decide to code for our system. I try to have multiple connection of computers through Local Area Network (LAN). I’m starting to get pumped up in writing code until Mr. Ignas came to inform us that we are going to do something. Before our lunch break, we undergo on a short lesson about creating a template layout and using Adobe Photoshop. After lunch we start to do the task given by Mr. Ignas, we start to create a template layout for the school. Having my knowledge in Adobe Photoshop give me advantage to some of the trainees that still not taking their multimedia subjects. I manage to create one template and try to help some trainees in their design.
Every knowledge that came from my subjects is very useful for me, and I also realize that being a programmer in the mere future must also have some designing skills.
July 12, 2017
Day 16
16th day as a trainee starts today, and we have an unexpected guests from the main campus. The guests came to monitors the computers and its peripherals, checking every serial number is their objective in our campus. The guests checked all the serial numbers of computers in every laboratory and also the offices. At first we expect that they will counter check the serial numbers of each computer, but it ends up in getting the inventory record that we provide.
After our lunch break I try to make a new desktop background for the computers in the laboratories. I’m satisfied after I created one and try to continue coding the system that I’m making.
July 13, 2017
Day 17
As for this day, I only stayed in the computer laboratory at Room 204, because we almost finish all the tasks that are given to us. In the said room I only sweep the floor and wiped some of the computers and its peripherals. After that I experimenting for my system, I was trying to share files through network using Command Prompt (CMD). I sometimes go to the faculty room to use the internet for this experiment. After hours of experimenting I manage to share, copy and move files through network just by using CMD and it feels really great. This experiment is a big step for the system that I was developing, because I might run the CMD in background and will finish one of the main objective of my system.
July 17, 2017
Day 18
This is my last week being a trainee here in the Cavite State University – Carmona Campus. As Ms. Regene Hernandez arrive with the cable ties we started tying the computer peripherals located at the room 203 and room 104. As we finished the task given to us, I start to write code in the room 203 with my thesis partner Junar Deseo. There are times that Mr. Jhumel Ignas is visiting us to know what we are doing. Also he gave us our Daily Time Record for us to compute our current working hours and our time left as a trainee. As we compute I was shocked that it will only take just 2 more days to finish the training. I was very happy because of this.
July 18, 2017
Day 19
This day will be my second to the last day as a trainee in the Cavite State University. I start the day with printing the computer peripheral’s tag in the sticker paper. After a couple of hours I’ve already got the tags for the Room 203 and Room 204, as I arrive in the laboratory my co-trainees lend me a hand in sticking it in its corresponding peripherals. As we finish, I start to write codes for my thesis. Honestly I was just experimenting all this time, I am experimenting all the possible solutions for my given objectives as I was using a spiral model in my thesis. Also we are ask by Mr. Alora to create another UTP cable for the library as we will finish our training the following day.
July 19, 2017
Day 20
Finally the last day of being an OJT intern, I was really happy that my fourth year is coming soon. It will only take four more hours for this day to complete my 200 working hours. As I arrived, my co-trainee asked me help her in cleaning the faculty room. After cleaning I attend the meeting for all the interns in the Audio Visual Room, in the meeting I found out that we might have an incomplete grade if we don’t manage to pass all the requirement the following day. As the meeting ended, I started doing my narrative right away having the hope that I might make it in time. I fail to make it because of some documents that was not still on my hand.
This day, I learned that doing paper works must be done as early as possible. I’ll do my best for my thesis proposal to avoid this matter.

Tasks performed

The trainee was asked to perform the following:

Encoding Encoding is one of the task performed by the trainee. The trainee performed this task inside the library as he was asked to encode subjects regarding to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science’s Bibliography of Books.
Installing. Installing software application and operating system are the primary task that the trainee does in his first and second week. The trainee learned how to install operating system with the use of removable flash drives only. The trainee installed windows 8 and 7 operating system, also software applications such as Visual Studio, office and Dev-C++ programming language.

Performing Preventive Maintenance Preventive Maintenance tends to prevent future damage to computers, this task was performed by the trainee to the computers located at the Osas.

Programming Programming is the main reason of the trainee in having his OJT inside the campus. During the trainee’s training time he manage to now the basic syntax of a new programming language which is C#. The trainee programs the system for his thesis using the said programming language and manage to have multiple connections through network as the greatest achievement within his training period.
image.png
