This festival is dedicated to the spring season. The Sanskrit word "Makar" corresponds to the sun sign of Capricorn and "Sankranti" means "Kranti", which means the movement or transmission of the sun from one zodiac to another. The planet Sun begins in the north and enters the zodiac sign "Makar" (Capricorn) of the Tropic of Cancer. And this movement or transmission is celebrated as Makar Sankranti every year.
