Ginger is a popular and tasty spice that originated from the Indian subcontinent to Southern Asia. It's a spice that is used since ancient times and has found its way to peoples home worldwide. But did you know ginger does not only improved the taste of food and drinks it also has a ton of health benefits and medicinal effects? This is due to gingerol a chemical compound that contains powerful medicinal effects.


What is gingerol?

Gingerol, properly as [6]-gingerol, is the active constituent of fresh ginger. Chemically, gingerol is a relative of capsaicin and piperine, the compounds which give chilli peppers and black pepper their respective spiciness.[1] It is normally found as a pungent yellow oil, but also can form a low-melting crystalline solid. - wikipedia

Ginger is known and proven to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the flu and common cold. It can also reduce muscle pain and soreness, and osteoarthritis. But according to the latest research, ginger may also help in lowering blood sugar level, reduce the risk of heart attacks, lower cholesterol levels, improve brain function and protect against Alzheimer's disease and may help prevent cancer. In another word, it's one of the "true" superfoods in the natural world.

Though I would like to add that the research I mentioned is still in its early phase and more studies are needed to verify the results. Nonetheless, it is very promising and if proven, the number of people dying from the above-mentioned diseases would be greatly reduced.

Ginger is widely available nowadays, simply go to a supermarket and you can obtain some. Therefore we have absolutely no excuse to not use ginger. As a spice ginger is very versatile and can be used to add flavor to any food. We can even make drinks and beverages from ginger. Below are some simple and easy ginger recipes.
