I Am Right Because... Science!

in busy •  6 years ago  (edited)

I love it when people act informed when they say the word "Science" because the news anchor or a meme said... "Science supports"

image.png

When was your topic studied? Who funded the study, who peer-reviewed the study who published the study? Which was your favorite study?

Next time someone pulls the Science card in a debate ask them which study they are referencing.

Saying the word Science does not make what you are saying... Science.

@whatsup,
Science what I didn't understand and what I won't understand! Coz it's something similar to "Complicated Relationship" at FB, that I never understood lol :D

Cheers~

I love science but I would never just sayscience says or similar in a discussion. I am all about writing the studies or theories behind the shit as it were :0)

An hypothesis: the majority of people who post on social media about how science supports their argument could not come up with a cogent definition for the phrase “the scientific method” if asked to do so, without first googling it.

scientific method gets a bit moot in the humanities, including medicine 😜

Common. Everybody knows.... science!

Why can't you just accept what we say without proof? After all i am saying is what everone knows to be true... yes but can you prove it?

This is now all of my discussions have gone recently. People are not thinking.

Shit that pisses me off; This is #1 on my list.

Meh... It always depends on your interlocutor and the topic... I guess. It's not the same if I talk with a colleague about some nasty EAGLE shit or with some friend that I saw that Japanese lab guys started making burgers from a pile of shit...
Also there is this article and study which is on the way what you were trying to say (I guess) about testing parachutes...

Only a few people said yes to this outrageous invitation, and they were excluded for reasons of questionable mental health.

In this case it was regarding vaccinations, which I am mostly for... However, there isn't a single scientific study on our current vaccination schedule.

Jeepers it's a good job we have never discussed vaccinations - I'm about the most anti vax person on Steemit :)

And about 99% of "science" is just the rantings of geeks paid by corporations to make up bullshit using long words so they can push their zionist agenda lies...

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

Well although my views are a bit different we would certainly be on the same page regarding mandatory vaccinations which is utter bullshit. :)

My state has a measles outbreak and they are trying to use it to force vaccinations.

My view is that there are health risks involved in getting vaccinated and health risks involved in not getting vaccinated. Each person should weigh the risks and make a decision. In many cases the risk of the vaccination is about the same as the disease and not worthy of the risks.

Where i take it a bit further than some people is that I'm not just saying that vaccines are dangerous, or that the primary aims of them are to create illness (profits) and infertility (eugenics) - I'm saying that as well as that the process of vaccination doesn't work at all - ever - that part is all just another con

http://www.frot.co.nz/design/health/vaccination/

You've summed up here the difficulty I have with differences of opinion (sorry, I meant science) - that it's used to oppress or remove others' civil liberties.

Is that along the lines of calling “fake news” when there is a headline that disparages you? :)

I suppose you can never really be sure something is scientifically proven because there will be detractors, the people conducting the test have an outcome in mind, or they are being funded by a group with a vested interest in the results supporting their business.

I suppose science is better than referencing texts that are a thousand years old but how much?

Good point

Exactly, the same thing. 96% of all scientists believe.. (how many scientists are there? how many were polled? )

I'd say science generally beats 'gut feeling', which is what certain politicians seem to go with. Any scientist has to accept it if they are proved wrong, but politicians don't do that. Of course it has to be good science with all the proper process. It's worked pretty well to make us all live longer, travel as we want and feed on technology, but now we have to deal with the problems that causes.

The problem with Science is that hypothesis’ are fact until proven wrong which has implications for the secondary impacts of those thoughts. Science has gotten us more advanced throughout the years but imagine the amount of unknowns created in the process!

I think that we can all agree that climate change is settled science...

I think we can all agree that sarcasm is an art.....

I think that we can all agree that I must be bored....

lol.. hmm.. that could be an insult

I would never insult you!
(unless you deserved it ,obliviously. lol )

Right on @whatsup! I'm kinda annoyed by these kinds of statements too. But I do the same thing too sometimes. :D

Nobody knows anything. So anybody going around saying science really just saying what we currently believe and not knowing anything else like everybody else.

Science has proven conclusively that this is a shit post. #science

Science has also proven that where there is shit there is an asshole not too far away

Yes, this is actually proven. Good point.

Once upon a time scientists said Lead in gasoline was great for everyone....

Also Science could not predict that smoking was bad... Until it did.

Yeah, especially with all the additives to cigarette tobacco

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

I read somewhere that @whatsup said "saying science doesn't mean science was involved." Sounds scientific to me. 😉

haha.

Even if it was scientifically correct, that doesnt mean it's true.

Can we even experience real objective truth with/through our limiting senses?

And I know science is trying to do that. But it will never succeed..

Because in science are also just humans, who are trying to extract knowledge.

Good point

(;

I wrote german posts about this topic

It would be if science were trying to find "real objective truth."
It isn't.
Science tries to find models of reality that predict well, all the while rejecting or adjusting models that do not; that is the gist of the scientific method. "Truth" is in the realm of metaphysics.

23% of statistics are wrong.

50% of statistics are better than the other half.

99% of statistics is manupulation of data to validate a desired outcome. Nothing scientific about that

Yep when we were kids to prove a point we would say "well recent tests have shown". Kind of an ongoing thing to say that back then.

Haha that's great. I'm going to steal that!

This gives new insight to "she blinded me with science."

lol
