UNDERSTANDING TERPENES: WHAT IS CARYOPHYLLENE?

True terpenes are not exclusive to weed plants; You can find more than 100 types of terpenes around the world in many different plants, fruits and flowers. It is the terpenes that are responsible for that aroma of pine in the forest or the citrus flavor of mandarins. But when it comes to marijuana, terpenes provide the characteristic aroma and flavor to each plant. For example, caryophyllene is the specific terpene for that spicy, woody, peppery and clove aroma and flavor in cannabis buds.

But this is not all that caryophyllene  Terpenes for sale , let's review the characteristics of this type of terpene. The cannabis family is extensive, made up of several different components that make up the bone structure of each variety, or in addition, of each plant. Starting with the two most famous components in marijuana, THC and CBD, the list can go on forever. For example, another set of important compounds in cannabis are the so-called terpenes .

WHAT IS CARYOPHYLLENE?

Caryophyllene also known as beta-caryophyllene is one of the primary terpenes, being one of the most abundant in cannabis. In fact, a cannabis plant can contain more than 25% of these terpenes in its final product.  However, caryophyllene is a rather unique terpene due to its ability to bind to cannabinoid CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system after being consumed orally. It is for this reason that caryophyllene is also sometimes considered a dietary cannabinoid . At this stage, it may be helpful to have a better understanding of what terpenes are . Terpenes are fragrant oils found in marijuana plants that give each plant its own unique smell and taste. It is the combinations of these that give each variety its unique fragrance and set of properties.

In marijuana plants, terpenes are produced in the trichomes of the buds, the shiny, transparent, lollipop-like glands where the other cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, are also produced.

WHAT ARE THE USES OF CARYOPHYLLENE?

In addition to flavoring salads or toasts, caryophyllene is also used for its preservative properties . Some products rich in caryophyllene, such as hops, can be found in beer to flavor and stabilize it. Some vodkas and whiskeys also contain caryophyllene in their composition.

Due to its strong and spicy taste, this terpene can also be used as a flavoring agent , most commonly found in candies and gum to enhance the pungent or citrus flavor. Pre-mixed cooking sauces and cooking spices are also rich in caryophyllene.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH PROPERTIES OF CARYOPHYLLENE?

Unlike other terpenes, there is a lot of research focused on discovering the benefits of caryophyllene terpenes. In fact, in the 1960s the organic chemist and Harvard researcher EJ Corey dedicated himself to the investigation of this terpene to identify its unique properties.Since Corey pioneered caryophyllene research, his studies have helped scientists today who also advocate for investigations of this terpene's therapeutic capabilities .
