Ancient North America: Cahokia City

in cahokia •  8 years ago

In school, my history lessons usually started with the Founding Fathers. The rich and vast history of pre-Columbian North American was relegated to several paragraphs as mostly pre-amble to a Eurocentric version of history.

The Guardian posted an article on the ancient city, Cahokia, which was built in what is now Illinois. It was populous, thriving and then abandoned almost overnight. All we have left is a mound. I am MADE of questions right now and look forward to reading more.

Do you know about the Kogi in the Sierra Nevada of Colombia? They call themselves the 'elder brothers' and say they are living in the heart of the world and taking care of the earth for us the 'younger brothers' who have forgotten to take care of it. Most people think they are remnants of the Tayrona civilization, making them some of the only unconquered or autonomous pre-Colombian Amerindian tribes left.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing. I love ancient history.

They say the Aztecs might have come from what is today Michigan USA. They say Michigan means land with large lake, and in Mexico, there is a state called Michoacan, it means place of fishmen. Coincidence?

Oooo......cool.
