Backpacking Isle Royale: Least Visited National Park

in camping •  8 years ago

My wife and I spent 4 days and 3 nights exploring Isle Royale, the least visited national park in the United States. We took the Feldtmann Trail Loop. This was our first experience backpacking together.

A few highlights:

  • seeing 2 moose run across a river
  • pride of surviving completely alone in the wilderness
  • sleeping alone under the stars on Lake Superior shoreline
  • cuisine: any food tastes amazing after a day of hiking with a 40lb pack

A few lowlights:

  • did not get to (have to?) use the first aid kit (I'm an ER doctor)
  • getting lost in a rainstorm to the point that terror began to set in
  • hiking in ankle deep water for several miles on day 3
  • "Million Mosquito Mile"

Overall the trip was great, and my wife and I have decided to make backpacking a hobby.

Enjoy!
