Unfortunately, identity politics is only becoming more and more prevalent. I think it's largely because it's easier for groups to get mad about that kind of stuff than to think of less tangible concepts like how the economy functions or how to balance costs of healthcare with quality and with wide coverage or when the military should be used and so on. I think it's just a matter of some people wanting to be angry so they latch onto anything they can. Fortunately though, it seems (to me at least) that those people who are eager to get angry are very vocal but are outnumbered by people who don't aren't passionate about being angry at everything and at everyone. It might take a while, but hopefully, society will start to realize that most people are like the people you describe: people who simply want to live and go about their days.
