In recent years, countries such as Norway, India, Israel and even the entire European Union have ban the use of animals for testing cosmetics. This is a huge step in the right direction, and many other countries have been following suit.
Canadians have been protesting, creating petitions and spreading awareness on the issue for quite a while. Canadian companies such as Lush and The Body Shop have public petitons in each of their stores for customers to sign, as well as offering a complete line of products that are 100% cruelty free.
Well, thanks to these companies for being a mainstream outlet of protest against animal cruelty as well as thousands of Canadians that strived for cosmetic testing on animals to be illegal in Canada, it finally happened!
Bill S-214, which is the Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, was just passed by the Senate. The bill will now move forward to the House of Commons before it becomes law.
The bill essentially states that cosmetic animal testing and the sale of cosmetics developed or manufactured using animal testing is prohibited in the country. To push for the bill to be passed, a nation-wide campaign was created and those who support it were asked to write to their provincial senator in hopes that they would push for the bill to be passed. Thankfully, that's exactly how it turned out.
Although it's still pretty early to tell when exactly the bill will officially become law, it's safe to say it won't be too long before all animal testing will be a thing of the past in Canada.
