I know a lot of you haven't even heard of her. Still, it's a story that should tell us a lot.
She had a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend. The court agreed that he was a threat. The police were made aware.
Carol Bowne was also aware that people break restraining orders. She was aware that people break laws. She was aware that the restraining order didn't mean that she was going to get an armed security detail, or a squad car outside her home.
So, she applied for a permit to buy a gun.
Unfortunately, she lived in New Jersey before the Heller and Bruen decisions, and New Jersey was legally allowed to require permits to have a gun -- not even to carry one -- just to have one in your house.
Notice that I'm referring to Carol Bowne in the past tense. Sadly, since New Jersey took over forty days to approve her application, her ex-boyfriend broke in to her home and brutally stabbed her to death.
Would she still be alive if she had a gun? We'll never know. What we do know is that a gun would have given her a chance.
I know that a lot of particularly women don't like guns. Men are twice as likely to own guns than women. More women believe that gun control should be stricter.
Still, maybe gun ownership should be on the radar of more people -- women included.
More than 90% of violent criminals in prison are men. As Penn and Teller once put it, "Guns don't kill people. People don't kill people. It's simple -- men kill people."
It's a common saying: "When seconds matter, the cops are minutes away." That's assuming that you even have the ability to call 911 when you're in a fight for your life.
It's a bit of a concern for me that there are women who are following the Carol Bowne route of going to court, trying to get protection orders and restraining orders, and saying that, if the orders aren't granted, they don't know what they're going to do.
Obviously, these are all problems with men. Men tend to be bigger, stronger, and faster than women.
We're supposed to have a massive -- even toxic -- gun culture. How is it that buying a gun and getting trained isn't in the minds of more women?
I wanna live in a world in which the Carol Bowne story was that an asshole who called himself a "man" ended up with two large caliber bullets to the chest and one to the head because he thought that he was attacking a defenseless woman. I want fewer of these stories to be that a woman with a restraining order placed on her ex got murdered by her ex, who broke the restraining order, and the cops showed up in time to take pictures of her dead body.
I'm not trying to tell anyone her business. If you don't like guns, and don't like to be around guns, God knows I'm not gonna force anyone to do anything.
Still, it should cross your mind. The Heller and Bruen decisions made it illegal for states to continue to do what New Jersey did to Bowne.
If you have a gun, you're stronger than a man.
Remember Carol Bowne.
