Leading Teams. The Common Information Effect
In all kind of groups, the type of information that we tend to discuss by all members is the common knowledge. Thus, information manages by everyone in the group has more powerful influence on decisions making. At the end of a discussion, the result may be an incorrect decision.
Why? The answer is that we could dismiss a particular piece of information that can be crucial to make a correct decision. Fuente
In this post, I would like to give you a particular strategy that you could applied to avoid the common information effect during group teams meetings.
As an example, our team is meeting diary to talk about our commons problems, challenges and action needs to be taken in short term. Sometimes, individuals do not have the opportunity to talk about enough to put on the table their ideas, or information that can improve our performance. For instance, if production is lower than the objective and the custody of the area does not inform about causes, we do not know how the cause of the lower production is and what actions we could take to fix the problem.
In this sense, our strategy consists of overcoming the common information effect by encouraging norms of debate and critical thinking and after, rank order alternatives to get consensus among teammates instead of prior selecting the best option. It is very important to alert individuals about the unique information effect in order to stimulate people and try to get from them information that is not common to the team. You should ask questions to engage each of the team members in the discussion.
This problem is not avoided by increasing the size or the amount of discussion of the team. Instead, you should motivate our team members in order to get from them all of possible valuable information.
I hope you find this concept valuable for all of your teammates.
Best Regards,
