Many people, when they retire, decide to take a course or two, volunteer, start a hobby and/or travel. Then, there are some, who begin a new career. Such is the case with Randall Kolb who had worked in Information Technology Services at Louisiana State University. He hadn't planned on pursuing other work, but, two days after he had retired, his wife, Judy, discovered a kitten stuck up a tree.
Though most cats are able to get themselves back down, some find it difficult. Sometimes they have trouble because they have back-curving claws. Which they’re able to hook into the tree as they climb up. However, they can’t climb down head-first. Kitties usually need to climb backwards to dig their claws in on the way down. If they don’t know how to do this, or they begin to panic, they freeze.
As for that kitten. Judy had found it while out for a walk. They didn't know who it might belong to. Randall tried to find someone who could help get the kitten down. After a , frustrating few hours, he came across a directory of cat rescuers & found someone for that area. Mr Kolb was so impressed by what he saw that he decided he wanted to learn it for himself. He started tree climbing training & practiced for about a year. He learned how to scale trees without damaging them & to work with different cat personalities, in order to have the best chance of getting them down safely. Once he felt ready to start rescuing frightened felines in need, Kolb called the local animal control to let them know that he was ready and willing to help.
He doesn't get paid for what he does. He doesn't want to. He'd just like an update & photos of the rescued kitty. If someone insists on paying him, he requests they donate it to a welfare organization.
