Arm & Hammer Cloud Control Clumping Litter Review VS Sand

I got a stray kitten. Well, it got me.

Sherlock Potato Pancake
I kept hearing meowing outside (from my 3rd floor apartment), so I went out back and as soon as Sherlock Potato Pancake saw me, he came running over. That was it. I was his. It wasn't just because he's so cute, either. I know from lots of experience that cats that run away, hiss, scratch or even just remain nonchalant are not interested at best and, at worst, will be a major challenge for most people. Cats who come up to you and are sociable, even after you've fed them and especially if they're quite young are cats that will make you happy. They'll cuddle with you, follow you, play fetch and really make you happy (except when they try to play-fight your feet).

I regret taking him in because we haven't been able to get rid of the fleas. Got rid of the worms and he doesn't have any diseases, but the fleas don't stay gone even when the vet put Revolution on him and I sprayed with Adams Flea & Tick Home Spray. The vet said that the Revolution should kill the fleas for a month, but that has NOT been our experience. That's been twice now. I need a better solution because this is getting expensive! But I digress from the review. Sorry.

We went to a pet store that's going belly up due to the pandemic lockdowns and stuff, and I saw this A&H stuff, with a rebate for everything except the tax, up to a certain dollar amount. The price was lower than the maximum, and A&H is famous, so I got it, and sent in the rebate request. I got it. Yay! A no-cost trial of a cat litter is great, especially when you don't know which to choose!

It started out okay. It seemed like it was made of sand with something else mixed in because it would clump very efficiently. In fact, it was so good at clumping that it took just under 2 month to exhaust most of it (I say most because the rest is in my daughter's room and, because of the fleas, she rarely lets him in). But, after a few days, I started noticing a smell, and it wasn't a good one. I also quickly realized that when the box was full enough, he'd use the carpet as a substitute, so we quickly moved to cleaning it out more often. Despite this, the smell persisted, and then I discovered that the bottom inch or so of little had formed a solid layer because of the urine. I was disappointed, mostly because I know it should NOT stink like that all the time. It got so coming home was unpleasant because the box is by the front door. I was thoroughly disappointed.

My vet said to get sand, so I got sand. I didn't even opt for the slightly more expensive play sand because my cat is pooping and peeing, not playing in it, so I just got the type of sand you'd use for mixing cement. No clouds, just like A&H. Clumps, but not as firmly as A&H. No smell at all. At a price of just under $4 for 50 pounds, versus $16 for 19 pounds of this A&H, sand is the hands-down winner of this competition, and all it did was lay there.

Will I bother to try other brands or another type of A&H? Probably not, unless I can find some really compelling evidence. Until then...
