It is said that the first written mention of the Catatumbo lightning was the epic poem "The Dragontea" of Lope de Vega, published in 1597, the narrative of the defeat of the English pirate Francis Drake by the mayor of Nombre de Dios, Diego Suarez de Amaya, it has recently been demonstrated that this assertion has been due to a possible confusion on the part of some authors. The prussian naturalist and explorer Alexander Von Humboldt described it as "electrical explosions that are like phosphorescent flashes...". It was reviewed by the Italian geographer Agustin Codazzi as a "lightning continued that seems to arise from the river of Western Australia and its surroundings".
