Today I will talk about the power that the rain had that was the main factor in a very tragic moment for all Venezuelans as was the tragedy or the landslide of the vargas.
It all started in November and especially in December there were significant precipitations: 15 days of continuous torrential rains since the end of November, reaching 911mm in 3 days. During a very short period we had great rainfall and in particular, on the 15th of December at night we got rain, which in one hour accumulated more than 72 millimeters. All this generated a catastrophic perspective for the Vargas State.
On the night of December 15 to 16, 1999, the rains caused the transformation of small summer streams into immense rivers that fell from the mountains. The effect of slopes greater than 30º, once the soils were saturated by the accumulation of rainfall, generated numerous mass movements and progressively produced erosion, detachment of the vegetation layer, sediment drag and formation of mud flows, plant materials and trunks in a flow that was increased in density by mixing with fine material, until being able to lift rocks of great magnitude, displacing them great distances.
This implied that water and mud to the coast with a force so great layers of detaching houses from their deposits, leaving a trail of rubble as practiced desaperienced all the houses and this mud river with all that was achieved to its It happens, including locals, cars and many human lives.
The whole country was shocked and in pain as many people in the water and mud disappear, and many asking for help to survive this thing that was happening to them, was something very difficult to forget.
The accumulated rainfall reached 1,200 mm in two weeks and the incredible amount of 1,700,000 cubic meters of mud and sediment are washed away by the flow of rivers to the coast.
After the time allowed, and with all access roads blocked by landslides in the state of Vargas, air aid is started to that entity from Caracas, children and the elderly are the first to be rescued.
the same people who managed to survive began, along with authorities, to help rescue people who were in critical condition.
Many people from the interior of the country were mobilized to help with the rescue work. foreign aid came immediately, many countries joined Venezuela in their pain and helped with donations and expert personnel in natural disasters
That day left a deep pain in the Venezuelans especially the Varguenses since they died around 5000 people, leaving tears and pain in each person who lost a loved one in the tragedy
I was very proud to see how each man and woman left everything to help those who needed it most no matter how tired, hungry or hurt they were in order to give their best to collaborate in each step of rescuing people.
Once again we see the strength and immensity of the natural, there is no one who can get in their way, only God can control since he is the creator of everything.
