The mandarin duck
Mandarin duck This species, originally from China and eastern Russia, is now virtually extinct in its place of origin - less than a thousand pairs of breeding. However, the beauty of its plumage caused it to be conserved and reproduced in other places such as in Europe and above all Japan. Especially in recent years and with the advent of the Internet, which popularized this species of ducks around the world, a great international effort has taken place in order to save the species. Effort that fortunately has been successful and today these beautiful animals are out of danger.
It bears a certain resemblance to the other species of bird that is within the genus Aix, the Duck Joyuyo.
It is a symbol of happiness and fidelity in China and Japan. Because of this, at weddings of important people, a pair of these ducks is given away.
It is distributed in East Asia, in the countries of China, Japan and Russia, but has been introduced to a part of Europe in England. Those of England, were once birds of collectors but have been escaping and feuding.
It is not in danger of extinction.
Distribution and habitat
Mandarin duck 6
Its original distribution area in East Asia. Fugitive birds have proliferated in Britain since the early 1900s. In Finland, only a few individuals are seen each year.
European populations are focused on a part of Japan, Russia and China.
In the 20th century, its distribution began in England, when they began to escape to collectors. It is estimated that the population in England is around 7,000.
For the same reason, there are small populations in the United States. In the city of Cerro Negro in North Carolina, there is a small isolated population in the wild and also in Sonoma County, California.
The mandarin duck usually inhabits dense forest areas near shallow lakes, ponds or lagoons.
