Celiac disease, also called as celiac sprue is an autoimmune disorder in which ingestion of gluten based food preparations causes damage to the small intestine. Once the lining of the small intestine is damaged, it becomes difficult for the body to absorb nutrients, especially fat, iron, folate, protein, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, calcium etc.
The intestine often causes diarrhoea, fatigue, bloating, anaemia; weight loss and can also lead to serious health complications. In children, this can affect their growth. Presently, celiac disease is not curable, but it can be managed by adhering to a gluten-free diet.
