It looks like Steemit is part of the same cabal as Facebook and Twitter. One down vote and they hide your post. It is fine to disagree but to purposely hide posts is unacceptable.

you can, others can use it against you. the point is that it's not a central authority that is censoring you, it is individual members of Steemit that can do so.
build your network in the community by commenting on others' posts, and build up your SP by writing and commenting; eventually you will be censorship-resistant unless a Whale goes after you.
In other words, don't worry, just keep working. Once you have a group of supporters, their votes will bring you past an individual's flag.
