A moment in time. Art form. My name is Bryan and it's nice to meet you.

I drew this picture recently. It was actually taken from a book about the town I grew up in: Centralia Pennsylvania.
You may have heard of this once little quaint village. It housed almost 3000 people in its prime. It was in the heart of the coal region.

In 1962, about this weekend as a matter of fact, the town was getting ready for Memorial Day... it was ridding itself of trash at a large dump behind Odd Fellow's cemetery. Something caught fire and lit a mine underneath the town. And since then a mine fire has burned ...

As time went on, so did countless attempts to put out the fire. Nothing worked. Canaries were not in coal mines during my childhood but instead in the basement of houses. A major gas line went through town.. a gas station had to close due to the heating underneath it.

And now almost three decades since I was born, the town is gone. Only a few houses remain .. a graffiti highway is even vacant, as it is being patrolled by state police..

A town that was.
In the picture I drew? It was a moment in time.. a snowstorm sometime in the 1980s. While I slept in my bed just a few blocks from St. Ignatius church.. sleeping while the entire landscape was torn down around me.
