Follow up post regarding Cathay Pacific Airline and Marco Polo club

8 days ago, I was sitting in the same CX lounge waiting for my flight to Bangkok when I wrote this post :
https://steemit.com/cathaypacific/@guyverckw/should-i-stay-with-marco-polo-or-should-i-move-to-other-frequent-flyer-loyalty-program

I asked myself if I should stay with Marco Polo membership, meaning that, keep flying with Cathay Pacific or should I change to other airline like Singapore airlinw, which in my opinion, is better than CX in both price and services.

You gave me some advices like to try out British Airway and I still have them in my pocket. Howevet, I am still sitting in a CX lounge waiting for my flight to Tokyo.

This is partly because this trip was arranged 2 ways ago, partly also because I haven't made up my mind.

Reason? Because of the layoff news of Cathay.

Cathay Pacific just had its second round of layoff in one month's time, which involved different level of management. The airline announced the layoffs together with the message that a re-organization is coming with the cut of manpower.

I do hope that the re-organization and change of management will bring positive movement to the Hong Kong based airline, and regain the trust of loyal customer like myself.

So, I will give CX another 6 months before I make my decision.

I enjoy Cathay because they are one of the safest airline in the world. I hope they will turn around their business soon so no one will get fired anymore.

Lol, when I first see your post, I am thinking how come you are always travelling and with the access with the lounge service XD. It really makes me feeling jealous on it. But when I furthe rread on it, it's about your choice of the membership scheme, So, do you really got a decision now?

I am a frequent traveler, with almost 50% of my time travelling. That's how I got to Diamond member of Marco Polo club last year. You can imagine how much time I spent with CX flight.
No, I haven't made up my mind yet, I will wait another 6 months to see if therw is any change In CX after CX's management structure changes.

Surprised that cathay is more expensive than singapore airlines. I've always found them to be cheaper when flying to either HK or Canada.

Agree that the service on Singapore Airlines is better. There was talk that they might cut back to save costs.

Oh. I would never choice CX again! As its service are very bad. They have fire a lot of people and just keep the useless people. It is unacceptable! Their price is not cheap but their service is even worse than many cheap airline company! Very bad and very sad.

Looks like you have big big issue with Cathay Pacific, may I ask why? I personally don't like the ways the service level dropped over past few years. I don't feel it worths the money I spent, that's why I am considering changing to other airlines.
You sure have your own story to tell, right?
Mind share with us?😁

Traveling will widen your horizon so I strongly suggest to take any chance you have to travel, should it be business, personal, take all chance!
Myself travel almost 50% of my time due to business trips. This makes me feel tired, but every trip does give me something, especially to new places. I hope you will get to the road soon.👍

took ur words :)
planning to japan next month haha~

great interresting post ! I vote you

Interesting issue. To answer your question about the loyalty program, I think we should take a look at the larger airline business world to better understand why Cathay Pacific is not faring as well as it did in the past. In my view, unless Cathay Pacific can figure out a niche strategy they are not going to fare well in the financial skies of tomorrow. This has more to do with market factors:

  • Several Chinese airlines have expanded their international route systems since they are now able to sufficiently feed their own domestic traffic or can create and sustain standalone specific niche routes between China and both Europe and North America. This directly competes with what seems like Cathay Pacific's feed to Hong Kong and then onward traffic system.

  • Middle Eastern carriers like Qatar, Emirates, Etihad, and others, have made a much more competitive air travel market.

There are several other considerations but in short, it would, in my view again, be wise to look at Singapore Airlines for long term frequent flyer membership as their business model has really held up well to both Chinese and Middle Eastern competition. Singapore Airlines is also a part of Star Alliance which has some great partners like ANA, Lufthansa, and others.

Hope that helps!
