Running my own curation trail experiment to promote chainBB testing/feedback

in chainbb •  7 years ago  (edited)

A couple week ago, @cryptoctopus ran an experiment - How to become a paid beta tester - to encourage users to give chainBB a shot and help solicit feedback. It brought many new users the chainBB to give it a shot and helped reward those users for doing so. 3 Days ago, that experiment ended and the auto voting stopped. It was simply too draining after HF19 to continue voting with the patterns he had set out. I decided to try my hand on it as well since it encouraged participation so well!

My Curation Trail

So starting last night, I crunched some numbers, and decided to take my own shot at it.

Currently, every post made via chainBB is getting a 0.05% upvote from my account. While my account isn't as large as many others, this tiny fraction of a vote still awards $0.20 in estimated value, and doesn't drain my voting power quite as harshly as using larger percentages. Over the last 12 hours I've cast votes on roughly 350 posts made via chainBB and my voting power has remained quite steady above 99%.

I am not sure how long I'll be running this experiment, but for the time being, it's on until it becomes a problem or needs adjusting. It may be discontinued at any point in time, at my discretion.

Larger upvotes for Feedback & Bugs

Another thing I've been doing is giving larger upvotes to those users who find (new) bugs and provide great feedback. This type of information is incredibly useful to me as I'm building out chainBB so I want to encourage it as much as possible.

You can participate by using the following forums:

Within the bugs forum - unique (and unreported) bugs will by far receive the largest votes on my behalf, and the more details/effort put into the report, the higher I'm likely to upvote.

For suggestions - I really want to know, in detail, what you think of the platform and what it would take for you to make it your permanent home for Steem. Writing "I want this!" and nothing more isn't incredibly helpful, but if you explain why you want a specific feature, cite examples (with links) of places that do that well, and even go so far as to technically describe implementation... those are all factors that influence my vote. I'd love to engage with you on your ideas! As a community we can truly build something great.

This is all subjective from my opinion of course - so please keep that in mind.

Others are welcome to join my trail or even delegate SP

I'd encourage others who are capable (and know how to setup either a trail or a bot to autovote) to follow my curation trail and promote 3rd party platform usage of Steem. Simply follow my voting patterns and I will do my best to not deplete your voting power, while still awarding those users who are giving the new platform a shot.

Edit - It's also been suggested to me that a different way to support this experiment would be to delegate some Steem Power to my account. You're more than welcome to delegate SP to my account (and revoke it at will) for the duration of this experiment. Just remember, it takes 7 days to return to your account after revoking :)

Did this whole thing sound confusing, and you're not sure what chainBB even is?

Here's a few posts to get you started, some by me, some by other users:

Success in Steem via multiple platforms (besides steemit.com)

Bitcoin isn't at it's level of success because a single website implemented and is using it, and the same holds true for Steem.

We need thousands of websites with different purposes powered by the Steem blockchain to truly levels of global penetration. As a user, I'd encourage you to check out all the various websites and apps that integrate into the Steem blockchain, and help them all reach their maximum potential.

If I had a post I could link to that highlights the various platforms and their differences, I would link it here, but I don't have one on hand.

This ecosystem revolving around Steem is going to grow at an exponential pace as we fan out across the internet, and I hope you are all as excited as I am to be a part of that!

Well I'd looked and thought "cool" but never used ChainBB before; now my next post with be through ChainBB just to understand it better. I will give my feedback on it later via a post using it.

The same here..loving it

It's certainly different. Maybe a good idea would be to find an existing bb community and get them to start a BB community.

That's the plan! Just waiting until the forums are less-beta and most of the bugs are fixed :)

/r/ethtrader/ is a pretty robust, crypto familiar group. If they could make crypto while posting and benefit from similar upvote sorting mechanisms, might be a good fit.

How nice of you to leave yourself such a large Upvote... lol...
@pocketechange

@Jesta, is it an automated process of upvoting or you are manually doing this much hard work?

It's completely automated via a bot. The bot votes on posts made through chainBB, but throttles itself to avoid voting on too many topics and draining my voting power. I still like to cast votes manually for bigger amounts ;)

i will get on the chainbb forum platform and drop my opinion of it soon

Great isnt it? loving it. Lets stay in touch

How much voting power i should use if i want to follow your trail? Same as you 0.05% or more? Though my vote does not worth much. But i would like to help you on your project.
I am very new to blockchain, would love to learn n help but right now i cant run even cli wallet or minning steem 😭

Mirroring my 0.05% votes would make the most sense, but being able to vote at 0.05% requires a certain amount of SP.

How much to be exact? I can buy thatin steem and convert it to SP?

I don't have exact numbers, but it's probably a pretty high amount. If I had to guess, I'd say thousands of SP, if not 10k+ to go sub-0.1% voting.

I also don't want to encourage anyone to buy SP just to support this experiment :)

Great strategy I am all in . Upvoted and following you in order to see your posts and support you become more successful
Lets stay in touch.

Also see why steemit will take over social media -including facebook:

I've got two questions: If I post on chainbb, will the post also be visible on Steemit? And do you have deleted the gaming section?

  1. Yep - all posts are made on the Steem blockchain, and thus visible via Steemit.com
  2. Nope, it's under 'Entertainment' now as a sub-forum, available here.

Oh there it is. Thank you for the quick respond!

I've just now stumbled across making curation trails, autovoting and such. Interesting. Didn't know it existed, and don't quite understand it just yet.
Luckily, I stumbled across this forum a couple days. Been great. Appreciate the 20 cent votes! As a noob, they are fairly valuable. Haven't experienced any bugs or issues at this point, so nothing to report on that front.
It's starting to blow my mind how big Steem and it's blockchain are going to be.
I'm only learning coding at this point...wishing I could contribute in the same way as jesta has. Eventually will.
Investing outside funds into Steem at this point. So, third party apps such as this to expand the Steemit landscape help everyone win in the longrun. Good job.

Thanks for upvoting.

Thank you as always for making chainbb great! I love being a paid beta tester! :) More power to this platform.

Can I see anywhere if the user chose 100% powerup option. I like to pint out to people not to do that!

Not yet on chainBB you can't, I haven't integrated any information about payouts or what type of payout they choose yet.

Thanks! I'll be using it for sure!

Nice!

One feature I am using most of the time now is the voting power slide, this is very important after HF19! Don't understand why Steemit keep the slide bar for ppl with 500SP, I mean this should be for everyone, right?
With this I still can vote after firat 10 times of the day.

It requires a set number of SP to use because it was supposed to not confuse newcomers on the site. However, getting 500SP when it was implemented was not that difficult, but today it is over $1,000, and since HF19 we need users to be able to use it with even lower SP. I really think we should lower the SP requirements for this feature now, but I'm sure the witnesses are already looking into it ;)

That's why I found chainbb one of the most powerful tool after HF19. The vote power slide bar rocks!

chainBB shows the vote slider regardless of how much SP you have :)

How very generous of you I would love to be a part of that curation trial.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Well this is great! Thank you, it's very generous of you. I was just wonderin how iam getting these upvotes so fast on chainBB but not oh Steemit.

I've got a bot running and monitoring the blockchain :)

thanks jesta for your kind heart :)

Since linking to something similar, I have noticed my votes have more value with less of a drain also.

The same here, I agree. Lets stay in touch

It's interesting to see everyone be so positive about this yet if you look basically everyone i commenting on this from steemit.

I got a chuckle out of that too.

I think there's a lot of commenting going on (primarily positive) any popular post, which users are just fishing for upvotes. There's been a huge surge of it on my posts over the past couple weeks.

I suppose they have a better chance at getting upvotes on a post with visibility as opposed to one without?

might be it, though i don't see much of them getting any upvotes, had they commented on chainbb at least they would've had 16 cents (-15%)

Wow dude. Very nice.

yeah!

You vote the comments on my post but not my post.. DUMB! Thanks anyways :)

My bot only votes on posts made through chainBB - which it doesn't look like you've done :)

Would explain things, my apologies!!

Just had a quick look on chainbb and it looks interesting for all steemit members. I will be giving more time to read more and understand it better to start using it.

I'm the 100th person to upvote this post. I'm stupid happy about this for some reason.

I mean, I actually giggled.

i don't know much about steemit so far but i will have a look
it's a little bit confusing. i'm not used to this kind of navigation
will try what works best for me and if there is anything valuable i let you know
my knowledge is limited haha
when it becomes to technical i'm lost
however have a nice time. greetings

Interesting experiment!

Very interesting I didn't know you can set auto vote. All 70+ reputation could/should do this :-)

I have no account at ChainBB so I will suggest here. Is there a way to set this up by developers, so one could see all the incoming Steems? Some are due to paid in a day some in few days, wouldn't be nice if a user could see total amount that is due to be paid.

Edit, I did find there is on SteemDB where you can see incoming SDB from your posts, but I could not find total incoming SDB from all sources, comments...

Hi @jesta , thank you for all you do!
I'll help as an end user.

Thanks for the auto upvotes! Was certainly helpful for a minnow like me.

The only bug (or not) that I can think of is that I find my words sometimes jump to the end of the paragraph when I'm typing. I don't have that kinda problem on Steemit and i'm not sure if i'm the only one with this minor hiccup.

It's doing this to me too and driving me crazy haha.

I'm looking into how to fix it - it's the "saving draft" feature that's causing it.

I thought I was accidentally pushing the wrong keys. Thanks for clarifying!

How can I post through chainbb?

Visit beta.chainbb.com and login using the instructions displayed. It's your account name and posting key, and there's a link on the login forum to find your posting key if you need assistance.

welll this is awesome! Seeeeee ya later Steeemit! ;)

Wow, I agree. Thank you buddy, how long will the upvote last, forever? haha

dude really this sounds really interesting i am not a tech person but this is nice thanks alot

I am really sorry for my newbie ask but what the hell is chainbb?

There's a big section towards the bottom that answers just that!

like a really noob, i clicked on the links and read after that, sorry for commenting without checking the links. now i am checking chainbb, i hope it won't be too bad for my private posting key. i mean to register with it there, even if i don't even know what is capable of doing lol

If something happened to your posting keys via chainBB - it wouldn't be the end of the world, and the most important thing is that your funds would be safe. I need to go through and add better explanations to that part of the website.

In short - if someone got ahold of your posting private key, they'd be able to vote and post as you, but wouldn't be able to steal any of your funds. The posting key only allows actions that could be reversed, and the active key can reset the posting key in case that happens.

Thanks, at this moment i don't see something bad in this but still :D Thanks for wasting your time with me

No problem, you've got every right to be worried about your keys :)

Good point, thanks for sharing

Read the post above and check it out

It's multiple women with big boobs in a row, a chain of big boobs if you will :p

nice

I love chainBB. How would one delegate SP towards it?

Right now there's only 2 ways I know of:

  • Using the command line wallet (on a linux server) to issue the commands.
  • Use Vessel, a Desktop Wallet I built. I'd recommend using going to the Releases Page on github to get the newest version which fixes some of the bugs in the version linked from that post. Direct link here.

It's not something easily available for most users at this point and is still somewhat confusing :)

I am surely gonna try it after reading your entire post thoroughly. Thanks a lot

Followed, upvoted and resteemed.

pls follow me

I just joined chainBB and it's really interesting.

Thanks a lot @jesta

Hmm...I think someone joined your trail that is commenting on my comments as I see your acct votes @charles1 comment each time. Not sure how it all works and if it's even related, but feel like I'm missing out on the ride.

The trail only votes for posts made through beta.chainbb.com.

Ok, yes I saw that. Will have to check it out. I regularly use steemstats for quite some time (thank you, by the way) so I'm sure this will be a great tool as well. :-)

good post....

Thank you for doing this!

I like @jesta
It truly dedicates time to grow Steemit / Steem
Keep it up
Much Love

Truly interesting! I had to follow and upvote!

Happy Sunday to you!

Following 🙋🏽

Wow really great post

Thanks for the information as your experiment worked well for me. Thanks.

Hi Jesta, up until a couple days ago I was autovoting to follow your curation. Is it possible for you to build autocuration on chainBB?

Hey jesta, I use a site you made a lot and I appreciate it. I'm not looking for an upvote or anything, but I just wanted to let you know that I mentioned it in my latest blog.

https://steemit.com/steemit/@walkingkeys/the-top-5-steemit-tools-to-help-you-become-a-better-steemonian

I misread the title as 'Ruining my own curation trail ...'

I was wondering why I received a vote from you instantly, now I see why!

The other awesome part was that I noticed today that poetry now shows more prominently on the creatives forum. I'm still a big fan of Chainbb thus far :)

And always a big fan of you @jesta !

Nice post man ...just follow u ...great writer u r

way to go!

Sorry... I'd leave an upvote, but my voting power is down to 38%...
@pocketechange

@jesta..Great Post!!! I would love to see you post on more om Steem than Ether :) Whales like you give a boost to steem. Thanks mate!!!

Hi @jesta

please read this article of mine.

I don't know if I can do this @jesta

upvoted and resteemed
