Chefchaouen, whose official name remains Chaouen, is not a world-famous tourist destination, but also a historical and cultural memory of a unique Arabo, Jewish and Iberian mixture. Built in 1471 by Ali Ben Rached to shelter Muslims driven from Andalusia and the Mujahideen against colonization, Chefchaouen was promoted to the rank of province on April 23, 1975. Since then, the city had expanded around the original neighborhoods of The Kasbah and Essaouikah formerly composed of 80 Andalusian families. It is a world heritage protected by Unisco, besides the other famous places in the city like: Wta Lahmam place, the great mosque and the source of Ras El Ma.
Chefchaouen is an excellent tourist destination with a very varied panoramic environment and an important location which is located 120 km from the Mediterranean port and 150 km from the Boukhalef international airport of Tangier.
