Definition

A state of a chemical reaction in which forward reactions and reverse reactions take place at the same rate is called chemical equilibrium

Types

There are two types of reactions

  1. Reversible
  2. Irreversible

Reversible reaction

  1. Those reactions in which reactant converts into product and product converts into reactant.
  2. These reactions are bi-directional.
  3. These reactions never goes to complition.
  4. These reactions always take place in closed container.
  5. These reactions represented by double head arrow.

Example

2 SIVO2-II + O20 → 2 SVIO3-II

This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:

2 SIV - 4 e- → 2 SVI
(oxidation)

2 O0 + 4 e- → 2 O-II
(reduction)

Irreversible reaction

  1. Those reactions in which reactant converts into product.
  2. These reactions are uni-directional.
  3. These reactions always goes to completion.
  4. These reactions always take place in open container.
  5. These reactions represented by single head arrow.

Example

2 H20 + O20 → 2 H2IO-II

This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:

4 H0 - 4 e- → 4 HI
(oxidation)

2 O0 + 4 e- → 2 O-II
(reduction)
