Chicago is rich with musicians who once played with Coltraine and all the greats before they died. Now the players who knew the players are old and dying, but a new generation is meeting them at improv night and learning what they can, while they can. One of the greatest young bassists is Matt Ulery. More on him in a separate blog. Our son Miles has had a few lessons with him. (There is no end to how much we can learn no matter how good we already are, whatever the field.)
That picture of him goes back to his college days, and the hair style reflects that. But it's still one of my favorites.
