The Step

Echoes of a scream were all they heard
Evoking an utter silence, as if the last song had been sung
The scream wasn’t just a scream, it was an ear piercing screech
One resting in hell would sound the same

As people heard it they stopped and stared
The battles being fought were resolved and the ships that were sailing sunk
All to come together for the scream
It would have been harmonious if not for the occasion

They all crowded around a crier
She cried and cried till there were no more tears left to shed
For she had done something awful and she knew it
And that is the hardest reality to face

Mother, oh Mother, she crowed
How could I be so blind
For it lay before me blankly
Yet you still lay unmoving on the bathroom floor

Because even though your spirit isn’t broken
I have caused such pain in you that I must weep
As you could never accept me again as one of your kin
For such a foul act

Mother, I have done a horrible deed
I have been warned of the punishment
But alas I still kept moving ahead
My feet shuffling just too far

For Mother, I have leaped in the forbidden plane
The crack in the pavement was glaring and taunting me
And now you cannot stand as you lay before me
Your back now in pieces, all because of that crack

When she finished her lament the crowd was silent
They all understood her sorrow and pain
As the crier had stepped onto the crack
The crack that broke her mother’s back
