Dear diary,
I’ve been in Brunei for 36 hours- work beckons. An intense flurry of meetings but I still managed to try out the meal, which Brunei is famous for.
Ambuyat,
Is a dish made from sago - like paste. It really looks like a bowl of glue, which you eat with a pair of melded chopsticks, which we thought, someone forgot to separate for us. In fact, my colleague and I broke our first sets of chopsticks apart, thinking the waiter forgot to...
Until we realised this was incorrect. The waiter laughed.
We laughed
Everyone knew we were tourists! Not that I cared, much...
but how were we were suppose to eat with a pair of unopened chopsticks? The answer is:
You dip the chopsticks into the paste and twirl it around so the paste sticks, like this:
Then dip the paste in the accompanying dishes you order.
It’s yummy. Simply delishes.
I was told to say this in Bruneian:
‘ nyaman banar ambuyat anni’
it means, this ambuyat is so delicious.
It was!And non- fattening as I obviously could not hold much with those chopstick like scooping instrument.
I ended up using my fingers and my cutlery.
If you’re ever in Bandar Sri Begawan, the capital of Brunei, check this restaurant out. They have other dishes too.
A very interesting and ‘light’ dinner meal consumption, diary.
The children meanwhile, were texting me furiously. I ignored them.
Love
