China's Hukou Book Documents May Become History

Today, China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) openly solicited public opinion on the draft Regulations on Marriage Registration (Revised Draft for Opinion), in which new provisions such as the abolition of the hukou book for marriage registration have attracted widespread attention. Some professionals believe that with the widespread use of information technology and big data, the hukou book may become an antique and exit the stage of history.
The earliest use of the household register is a symbol of identity, and when the ID card appeared, the role of the household register diluted a lot, and now people wherever they go, such as business trips, travel to stay in hotels, show ID cards can indicate their identity. Although, at present, the household registration book in housing transactions, proof of kinship, children's school enrollment and other aspects are still assuming the role, but in the long run, with the arrival of the information age, especially the realization and widespread use of advanced technologies such as big data, will reduce a lot of lengthy and complicated procedures, household registration book and other paper products office will be replaced.
It is understood that, as early as 2019, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau launched the electronic license of the residents' household register, the head of the family household and collective household that has received the Guangdong-issued residents' household register and each member of the household to generate the electronic license of the residents' household register accordingly. The electronic license of the household register can be used to verify the holder, household registration information and the relationship of household members. 2022, Chongqing Public Security also launched the “electronic household register”. In addition, a variety of personal electronic credentials such as identity cards, driving licenses and residence permits are also available.
