The South China Morning Post reports that the health of Liu Xiaobo, winner of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, is deteriorating, and doctors say he may die soon.

Liu was imprisoned in 2009 on charges of subversion, but was recently released on medical parole because he has terminal liver cancer.

The Post reported on Thursday that liver cancer has spread to other parts of Liu's body, and that he was no longer able to take the same medication as before. Doctors have prepared his family and friends for the inevitable loss.

A German doctor has seen Liu, the Post also reported. The doctor did not provide any prognosis to the newspaper.

Liu is one of the principal authors of Charter 08, a pro-democracy manifesto signed by thousands of Chinese citizens. He was arrested and convicted in 2009 on charges of subverting state power.
