Love is a universal language that the most unlearned barbarian understands and respond instinctively to, it is that golden key that perfectly fits all locks . A powerful remedy that has tamed many a wild beast, melted many hardened heart and broken down many seemingly impregnable barriers! Love has an appeal that nothing else has, it wins where everything has failed. Many who seemed can't be changed by logical arguments have become persuaded by loving attention.
It is essential to clearly define what true love is because despite the extent of selfishness, inconsideration, cruelty, and injustice we find around us almost everyone claims to possess his queen of virtues. The potency and efficacy of love is acknowledged by all which is why everyone yearns to be loved, accepted and treated with consideration. Therefore true love has the following characteristics which include:-
- It suffers long:- It is not touchy or temperamental. It remains calm and pleasant despite repeated provocations. It chooses to suffer wrong in other to redeem others from perdition. Whatever the level of wrong from others, its compassion never turns to aversion.
- It is kind:- It is not harsh but tender-hearted, gracious, useful, pleasant and benevolent. It always gives and serve.
- It is not puffed up:- It does not promote nor advertise itself. It does not boast of its own gifts, achievements or possessions. It does not despise others by making them feel inferior or worthless.
- It does not envy:- True love is never envious of others happiness or good fortune. It does not jealously desire what it does not possess.
- It does not seek its own:- It is not self-centered, it does not seek to have it’s own way at whatever cost.
- It is not easily provoked:- It keeps its temper under control, it is not easily irritated or frustrated by the shortcomings of others.
- It does not think evil:- It does not harbour feelings of hatred, bitterness or revenge. It is not critical or fault-finding.
- It hopes all things:-True love never gives up on others even when they have given up on themselves.
Now that we know what true love really is, let’s begin to ask ourselves: do i really love others as i often claim? If our love has fallen short of these attributes then it’s no longer love. Love is a command and it doesn’t change with the tides of time, it is ever constant. You must be diligent therefore in cultivating and nurturing deep, sincere, and fervent love in your relationships. Love is a venture and it is greatly rewarding.
