Reacting to the above, I would like to say that the people of God doesn’t pay tithes; but they gives or brings their tithes to the house of God for divine blessings and to show they honors and worships God.
Responding to the above question, the Hebrew word for tithe is the tenth. It is just a percentage expected of us to give or bring into the house of God out of all He has blessed you with through your labours.
If your labour is being a sales person, a public servant, farmer, artisan or whatever, God instructs you give a tenth of what your labour produces.
Genesis 14:20 "... And he gave him tithes of all."

Tithing was an Old Covenant practice that has not translated into the New Covenant. New Covenant giving should be a free will offering or service given to the church. In some instances, people gave all the money they had after selling everything they owned. Other times, people just let others into their home. Other times, people could only give services to the church, such as the poor simply coming to clean or help build. All of these things are contributions to the family, not donations to an organization.

Tithing is part of the old covenant.
(2 Corinthians 9:6-7 NIV) Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. {7} Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
