Family extension

in christmas •  6 years ago

I have been renting places in Manila for about 18 years and counting due to work. Within that span of time, I have been with different residence addresses. The longest stay I had in a residence is eleven years and counting. The second longest was more than five years and there was where my landlady used to maintain giving gifts to us every Christmas season. What made me stay that long with these land ladies? They treated me like a member of their family. I kept that in mind when I started my small real estate leasing business few years ago.

Few days ago, I was having a hard time thinking about what to buy when I passed by piles of these boxes. I thought they were cut and practical for a gift - a pair of salad bowls. What's cool is that there are three designs so that would somehow make a variety for the boarders. Plus, it is something that they wanted - something to be used and not eaten.

Aside from the business that the tenants bring, they become part of our family in the long run. There were cases when couples come to me with their problems which sounds funny because I thought they should know better than a single person. At times, we invite all of them when we have special occassion and they do the same to us. When shyness strikes and we do not go down to their units, they would deliver the foods to us. Majority of them have been with us for years and counting. A couple even had their two sons and they are still with us. The boys will be christened in January.

The silly and lazy part of me tried to strike. I thought of not wrapping these and just hand the boxes to them. But there won't be any suspense at all and that sounds boring, yeah? Okay, so I worked on the wrapping at night when I brought them home. Here's for a start.

During the first Christmas season when I thought of giving something to them, I was lazy and running out of time before the Christmas day itself. When I saw cute boxes of cheese balls with tag ready as a gift in the grocery store, I did not think twice. I bought a dozen and distributed to them.

Half-way done. I'm sleepy.

In November the following year, I was having a chat with them and we came to the topic of what will I be giving away come December. I laughed and said, "I don't know yet." Then they opened up that they would better appreciate something to be used rather than something to be eaten. That is because, as they said, something to be used can remain souvenir or remembrance from us while food will be consumed and gone very soon. They added that they will have something to remember staying in our house if ever they leave for whatever reason.

All wrapped up but the gift tags and the mess can wait later. I'm about to sleep on them. It's pass one o'clock in the morning.

I was happy with the fact that they were so comfortable telling me what they want. But hey, they like staying in our house. That was more heart warming. Since then, I heeded what they wanted: non-edible gift.

All set. Ready for distribution.

I take this every season as an opportunity to thank them for the business and for trusting and staying with us for long term. It is a small gesture but I hope it helps to show our appreciation. After all, this is a time of giving. 😊

What a nice landlord lady we have here 😉 merry christmas to you and yours @macoolette, many happy returns and I'd love to have one os those salad bowl too 😂😂😂 but I think I need to rent one of your building😉

Thanks @cicisaja! I hope you also had a happy holiday! I can find you another pair of salad bowls if you come over to the Philippines. 😊

One of my buildings? Oh, let me make that a personal goal in real life to have another one constructed. That is because I only have one, just a small building with different units. 😊 If you happen to come and there is a vacant unit then maybe I can lend it to you for free. 😃

What a lovely @macoolette 😉 I think I should wait for your sign when you have another building later 😉 so I don't have to go to the hotel in case I want to spent some vacation in your place😊

Next year.. maybe you should prepare it earlier so you won't have to spend a whole night to wrap the gifts😉

Yay, let's see that new building next year! 😃

Yap, I need to have better time management next time. 😊

Howdy macoolette! wow that is an amazing relationship that you have with your renters! That's wonderful and the gifts are a great choice. What is Balay Fredrosa?

Sometimes my renters are testing my patience during collection period but still, they bring business and they stay. They even talk very positively about their stay with us when there is a unit that gets vacated and there are seekers. My renters help to boost and attract other renters. Bless them!

Balay means home. Fedrosa is the name I gave to the house. 😃

howdy again macoolette! oh I see, the name Fedrosa, what does that mean? It sounds like a wonderful set up you have, is it alot of work and do you want to get more rental houses?

Fedrosa is the combination of my parents' names - Federico and Rosa. 😊 When my mother knew about it she asked why didn't I come up with something from my name. I said it is a tribute to them specially that it is the first house I had built.

It was a lot of headaches when the construction was going on. There was even a time when I sobbed because of anomalies with the contractors. I wanted to sue but I can't afford to divert any amount to legal matters. I needed all funds that I had for the construction itself.

I thought rental houses is indeed a good setup for business specially when you want to retire. Many were saying I can now retire and just wait for the collection every month but geeessss... They do not know that I am still paying for my loan which I used for the construction.

More rental houses would be great but the question is the fund. I'll see how it goes this coming year when I can somehow, and finally, breathe from the first loan. 😃

Howdy again macoolette! oh I see..that's amazing, I dind't know that you had this house built, and specifically as a rental building, like an apartment building as we would call them here..that's fantastic and very wise planning. And the lessons you learned from building the first one will help you on the second one. How long before the loan is paid off?

So you are an entrepreneur! We are too. You're going to be very successful. How can you not be married? no time for men? or are you married? I have the impression that you aren't.

oh, ps- very creative and honorable name..Fedrosa.

The rental business was my mother's idea. When I was just starting my career, I did not have any plan of where my money has been going until my mother told me to stop giving her share and I start earning and planning for my own project. What project? 😂 That was when I thought of buying a car. It would have been much cheaper and I may not have a loan by this time. Then she challenged me what will I do with a car when I don't have my own house? Will I live in my car? Okay, that's my mother...

The first loan will be finished by next year and the other one will be in two more years. I may re-avail the first one if I will indeed plan to start another construction but will see...

no time for men?

They are afraid of me, I guess! 😂😂😂

Speaking of married life, you mentioned that you do not have a family there in Texas. Where are they? Any kids?
