We're now ten years removed from the death of Christopher Hitchens.
It would be an understatement to say that Hitch influenced me. He was undoubtedly a genius and he never failed to be courageous. I'm certain that, if he were alive today, he would qualify as uncancelable; but, his career and his platformers would almost certainly be eroded more than they were a decade ago. Hitch lived long enough to see liberalism begin to leave him while claiming that it was in fact Hitch who had left liberalism. I also have every reason to believe that Hitch had the foresight to know where the left was headed.
Of course there were times when I disagreed with Hitch completely. Still, unlike modern journalists, he never lied - yes, I'm rather certain of that. When he was wrong, he was wrong for the right reasons. He spoke the truth as he saw it even if it bolstered his enemies.
We should be thankful for Hitchens' contributions and we should remember him as an example of what intellectual courage looked like.
