It seems like raising children just get's harder and I often find myself asking what I'm doing wrong. As far as that goes, the list can go on and on. I feel like I spend too much time undoing a lot of what they're being taught in school. Some call it teaching but I've begun to call it indoctrination.
Last year my 13 year old came home with a note from a teacher thanking me for sharing my sweet, wonderful daughter and said she was a role model for the other students. I'm constantly complimented on both girls manners. When I was a kid, saying yes mam and no sir was the norm but now it is rather the exception. It's just a matter of respect.
A few years ago we bought a small farm in east Texas. As it turns out, we unknowingly moved to one of the most racist towns in America. To this day there is not a single black family living here. Stories I've heard of things done to black people in years past are down right evil. I don't care what color your skin is or what nationality you are. A human life is a human life. God loves us all the same.
Recently, my 12 year old was at the public pool and saw a little black kid there that was being bullied by 3 other white kids. She said they were telling him he wasn't supposed to be there and threatening to beat him up! Valerie ran over and told the young idiots that he had just as much right to be there as they did and if they didn't leave him alone they would be have to deal with her! The girls have been involved in martial arts for several years and although they don't talk about it, there have been 5 newspaper articles written about her sister, Kelli. In a small town news travels fast!
That had to be one of the proudest days of my life. It's easy to follow the crowd but takes a true champion and leader to go against the grain and stand up for what's right. It was then that I realized I must be doing something right.
There is good and evil in every race, color and nationality. If you are one who looks down on another because of race or nationality...in short, you are a very ignorant person. Get over it. You may want to start by looking in the mirror.
