Hello everyone! Several days ago, I posted the first performance of my original Christmas carol. Last night, it was performed at the Christmas eve service, so I've decided to post it here again (with sheet music as well as the performance). In this post, I will be discussing the technicalities behind the piece a little bit more. Here is the sheet music version (with the computer playing):
The Structure:
This piece is in ternary form, meaning that it consists of an A section, a B section, and a repeat of the A section. There are, of course, transitions between each of the sections, but it is simply ternary form.
Other
The transitions consist of "textbook" modulations in which I utilize the vi of A-flat as a pivot point, turning it into the ii of E flat, and when I am going back to A flat, I use the ii of E-flat as a pivot point, turning it into the vi of A-flat to modulate back.
There is also a piano part and a bass part which are not fully noticed in the performances because we had to cut the bass part and revise the piano part in order to accommodate the skill of the choir.
Lyrics
Here are the lyrics (by Frances Ridley Havergal and Traditional):
A Merry Christmas to you!
For we serve the Lord with mirth,
And we carol forth glad tidings
Of our holy Savior's birth.
So we keep the olden greeting
With its meaning deep and true,
And wish a Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year to You!
O wake ye, little children,
And be of lofty cheer.
Yon sun so high along the sky
Hath shone two thousand years.
And once it saw a little child
In manger lying undefiled,
And all about the cattle mild
Did lovingly draw near.
So wake ye little children,
and be of lofty cheer.
A Merry Christmas to you!
For we serve the Lord with mirth,
And we carol forth glad tidings
Of our holy Savior's birth.
So we keep the olden greeting
With its meaning deep and true,
And wish a Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year to You!
Here is the Christmas eve performance:
As I said yesterday, thank you to Bob Morris and the Westminster Youth Choir for making this possible. Thank you also to the soloists (who I will not name in order to maintain privacy) as well as the Pianist Glenn Kinckner. Thank you also to Mrs. Kim Russell for working with the soloists as well as giving me compositional advice. Thank you also to Marcantonio Barone and Andrew Desiderio for their compositional advice.
Thanks for reading this! Merry Christmas! Hopefully I will see you in the new year! (Or in my Disney posts, check back for those). See you later!
