I chuckle every time I hear some chuckle head economist, business man or pundit predict that a technology has no future because look how expensive or unwieldy it is.

There has been a very similar improvement in the cost-effectiveness of photovoltaics. On the other side of things, internal combustion engines already went through their period of optimization over the 20th century. There's basically very little left that can be done economically. They will hold out long past their due date due to sentimentality, legacy infrastructure that's impeding progress and optimal resource use, economies of scale that create unfair competition, and loads of corrupt business practices distorting the economy and the government.
