On Saturday 18th of September, we woke up early, grabbed the materials and met at Mgendela street ready to clean-up the illegal dumpsite that is found at Mgendela park and the streets around.
In total, 50 people gathered to clean the area and I was amazed to see that young generations full of passion for the environment were present. We collected 663 kg of waste (171 bags) and filled in the municipal waste truck. Unfortunately, the municipal dumpsite that is found at the outskirts of Njombe is for now the "less-bad" solution to the solid waste problematic and the waste we collected was taken there.
We also conducted a Waste Audit and Brand Audit (WABA) to analyse which are the most abundant types of wastes and the brands behind them. In our case, PET beverage bottles were by far the most abundant wastes. The good news is that the top polluters are local companies; therefore, we expect that the advocacy work which will follow this research will lead to the desired changes.
The World Clean-Up Day is an event celebrated in more than 180 countries around the globe. In Tanzania, 45 sites were cleaned in 17 regions and we are happy to be a small drop in this inspiring movement for a more sustainable planet.
Thanks to all SHIPO team, CEFA, Roots&Shoots Njombe, The Boy Scouts, Njombe Town Council and Nipe Fagio, for making this event possible in Njombe. Hongereni sana!
